    The Honest Thing to Do

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Elena had been working at the small shop for nearly two years, and she took great pride in never making errors at the till. One busy morning, however, she served a customer called Mr. Karimi, who was in a hurry and buying a few everyday items. In her rush to keep the queue moving, Elena miscalculated his change and handed him far more than she should have. Mr. Karimi thanked her quickly and left before she had any chance to realize what had happened. It was only when she balanced the till during a quiet moment that the shortage became clear, and a familiar wave of dread washed over her. Elena stood behind the counter, turning the problem over in her mind.

She knew that saying nothing would be the easier option in the short term, but it would also mean the shop's accounts would not add up at the end of the day. Her boss, Mrs. Patel, was a fair and understanding woman, yet Elena still felt her stomach tighten at the thought of admitting the mistake. Taking a steadying breath, she walked through to the back office and knocked firmly on the door. "I need to be upfront with you about something," she said, and then explained exactly what had happened. Mrs. Patel listened without interrupting, her expression calm and attentive throughout. Rather than reacting with frustration, Mrs.

Patel thanked Elena for coming forward so promptly and reminded her that mistakes were a natural part of any working day. Together they noted the discrepancy in the records and agreed on how to handle it going forward. Later that afternoon, to Elena's considerable relief, Mr. Karimi returned to the shop. "I noticed the change seemed a bit generous," he said with a smile, and placed the extra money on the counter. Elena thanked him warmly and felt the tension finally leave her shoulders. The experience had been uncomfortable, but it had reinforced something she already believed: that honesty, even when it is difficult, is always the right approach.
