She decides to call the dentist's office. It is lunchtime. The other teachers are in the staffroom. Chloe sits at the table with her cell phone. She finds the dentist's number. She takes a deep breath. Then she dials the number. She is a little nervous. A woman answers the phone. "Hello, City Dental Clinic. How can I help you?" she says. "Hello," says Chloe.

"My name is Chloe Green. I need to make an appointment." "Of course," says the woman. "Is it urgent?" Chloe thinks for a moment. "Yes, I think so," she says. "My tooth hurts a lot." "I understand," says the woman. "We have a slot on Wednesday at two o'clock. Does that work for you?" Chloe checks her schedule on her phone. She does not have a class on Wednesday afternoon. "Yes, Wednesday at two is perfect," she says. "Great," says the woman. "Can I take your date of birth?" Chloe gives her date of birth. The woman types it into the computer. "All done," she says. "See you on Wednesday, Ms. Green." "Thank you so much," says Chloe. She ends the call. Chloe puts her phone down on the table. She feels happy. Her colleague Mark is sitting across from her.

He is eating a sandwich. "Everything okay?" he asks. "Yes!" says Chloe. "I just made a dentist appointment. My tooth has been hurting for days." "Oh no," says Mark. "That sounds painful." "It is," says Chloe. "But my appointment is on Wednesday." "That is good news," says Mark. "I hope the dentist can fix it quickly." "Me too," says Chloe. She smiles. Then she remembers her tooth hurts. She stops smiling. Mark laughs. Chloe laughs too. She pours herself a glass of water. She drinks it slowly. She is glad the appointment is soon. Chloe Makes a Dental Appointment on Her Lunch Break

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Chloe, a teacher at a busy school, has been putting off calling the dentist for nearly a week. A persistent toothache has made eating and drinking uncomfortable, but finding a quiet moment during the school day has been harder than she expected. When the lunch bell finally rings, she grabs her cell phone and heads to the staffroom, hoping for a few minutes of peace. Several of her colleagues are already there, chatting over their food and making the most of the short break. Chloe settles into a chair at the far end of the table, pulls up the clinic's number, and reminds herself that making the call will only take a few minutes. She takes a steady breath, dials the number, and waits. The receptionist answers promptly and greets Chloe in a warm, professional tone.

Chloe explains that she has had a toothache for several days and is wondering whether she could schedule an appointment as soon as possible. The receptionist asks a few quick questions, including whether the pain is severe enough to be considered urgent, and Chloe admits that it has been affecting her ability to concentrate at work. After a brief pause to check the system, the receptionist offers her a slot on Wednesday at two o'clock in the afternoon. Chloe quickly glances at her schedule on her phone and confirms that she has no classes at that time. She accepts the appointment, provides her date of birth for the records, and thanks the receptionist before ending the call. Across the table, her colleague Mark has been watching her with mild curiosity. "Dentist?" he asks, nodding at her phone.

"Was it that obvious?" Chloe laughs. "I've had this toothache for days and I kept finding reasons to put it off." Mark nods sympathetically. "I did the same thing last year. By the time I finally went, it was a lot worse than it needed to be." "That's exactly what I was afraid of," Chloe admits. She picks up her coffee and then thinks better of it when the warmth makes her tooth twinge. Mark notices and smiles. "Wednesday can't come soon enough," she says, setting the cup back down with a sigh.
