    Classroom Things

    In this lesson, you will learn common classroom objects in English. These are the things you see and use every day in a learning environment. You'll learn vocabulary for furniture, school supplies, and teaching tools, along with how to describe their locations and uses. Mastering these words will help you feel more confident in any classroom setting.

    📖 A Day in the Classroom

    Every morning, Maria walks into her classroom and sits on her chair at her desk.

    She takes out her book, notebook, and pencil from her bag.

    The teacher writes new words on the whiteboard with a red marker.

    Maria copies the words carefully and uses her eraser when she makes a mistake.

    By learning these everyday classroom words, you can understand instructions and communicate easily in any English classroom!

    Classroom Furniture

    Desk / Table

    A piece of furniture with a flat surface where students write and keep their materials.

    • This is my desk.
    • The teacher's desk is at the front.
    • We sit at small tables in groups.

    Chair

    A seat with a back, usually for one person to sit on.

    • Please sit on your chair.
    • This chair is comfortable.
    • We have new chairs in our classroom.

    Whiteboard / Blackboard

    A large surface on the wall where teachers write with markers or chalk.

    • Look at the whiteboard.
    • The teacher writes on the blackboard.
    • Clean the board after class.

    Bookshelf / Bookcase

    A piece of furniture with shelves for storing books and materials.

    • The books are on the bookshelf.
    • Put your notebook on the bookcase.
    • Our classroom has two bookshelves.

    Writing Supplies

    Pen

    A tool for writing with ink. Common types include ballpoint pens and gel pens.

    Pencil

    A tool for writing with graphite. Can be erased with an eraser.

    • Use a pencil for your homework.

    Eraser / Rubber

    Used to remove pencil marks. 'Rubber' is common in British English.

    Marker

    A pen with a thick tip, used for writing on whiteboards or highlighting.

    • The teacher uses red markers.
    • Don't use markers on paper.
    • These markers are dry.

    Books and Paper Materials

    Book / Textbook

    A set of printed pages with information, stories, or exercises for learning.

    • Open your book to page 10.
    • This textbook is heavy.
    • I love reading books.

    Notebook / Exercise Book

    A book with blank pages for writing notes or doing exercises.

    • Write in your notebook.
    • I have three exercise books.
    • Her notebook is full.

    Paper

    Thin material for writing or printing on. Can be loose or in pads.

    • Write on this paper.
    • I need more paper.
    • The teacher gives us paper.

    Folder / Binder

    A cover for holding and organizing papers and documents.

    • Keep your papers in a folder.
    • My binder has dividers.
    • This folder is red.

    Bag / Backpack / Schoolbag

    A container for carrying books and supplies to and from school.

    • My backpack is heavy.

    Ruler

    A straight strip used for measuring distances or drawing straight lines.

    • Use a ruler to draw lines.
    • My ruler is 30 centimeters long.

    Scissors

    A tool for cutting paper and other materials. Always used in plural form.

    • These scissors are sharp.
    • Be careful with scissors.

    Glue / Glue Stick

    Adhesive used for sticking paper and other materials together.

    • Use glue for your project.
    • My glue stick is empty.
    • The glue is on the shelf.

    Asking for Things

    • Can I borrow your pen, please?

    • Where is the dictionary?

    Giving Instructions

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    ❌ Wrong: This is an book.

    ✓ Correct: This is a book. (use 'a' before consonant sounds)

    ❌ Wrong: These is my pencils.

    ✓ Correct: These are my pencils. (use 'are' with plural 'these')

    ❌ Wrong: Can I borrow your scissor?

    ✓ Correct: Can I borrow your scissors? (always plural)

    ❌ Wrong: Where is the teachers desk?

    ✓ Correct: Where is the teacher's desk? (use apostrophe for possession)

    ❌ Wrong: I have a eraser.

    ✓ Correct: I have an eraser. (use 'an' before vowel sounds)

    Learning Tips

    Practice saying the names of classroom objects out loud while looking at them
    Create flashcards with pictures of classroom things and their English names
    Label items in your study area with sticky notes showing their English names
    Remember that some words like 'scissors' are always plural in English
    Practice using 'a' and 'an' correctly - 'a' before consonant sounds, 'an' before vowel sounds
    Learn both singular and plural forms: book/books, pen/pens, chair/chairs
    Practice common classroom phrases like "Can I borrow..." and "Where is the..."
    Try to think in English when you're in a classroom or study environment
