    Zara's Big Decision

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Zara sat on a bench in the city square. It was a warm morning. The square was busy. People walked past her quickly. There were pigeons on the ground near her feet. Zara looked at them but did not see them. She was thinking hard. She had two letters in her hand. One letter was from a big school far away. The other letter was from a job in her city. Both were very good. She read the letters again. Her hands felt a little cold. She took a deep breath. She did not know what to do. She closed her eyes for a moment. A friend walked across the square.

His name was Tom. He saw Zara on the bench. "Hello, Zara!" he said. "You look worried. Are you okay?" Zara looked up at him. "I have a big problem," she said. "I need to make a decision today." Tom sat down next to her. "Tell me about it," he said. Zara showed him the two letters. Tom read them carefully. He was quiet for a minute. "Both are really good," he said. "What do you want most?" Zara thought about the question. "I want to learn new things," she said. "But I also love this city." Tom nodded slowly. "That is hard," he said. Zara stood up and walked to the middle of the square.

She looked at the tall buildings around her. She looked at the fountain. The water was bright in the sunlight. She thought about her family. She thought about her dreams. She took another deep breath. Then she smiled. She walked back to Tom. "I made my decision," she said. "I am going to the school." Tom looked happy. "That is wonderful!" he said. "I am proud of you." Zara felt scared but also excited. She put the letters in her bag. She looked at the square one more time. "I will come back one day," she said quietly. She walked away with her head up.

    The Weight of a Choice

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Zara perched on the edge of a stone bench in the heart of the city square, two envelopes resting in her lap. The morning air was mild, and around her the square hummed with its usual rhythm: vendors arranging their stalls, children chasing pigeons, and commuters striding purposefully through the open space. Zara, however, was perfectly still. She had been sitting there for nearly an hour, turning the same two options over and over in her mind. One envelope contained an offer from a prestigious school located far from everything she knew, while the other held a promising position at a firm right in her own city. Both opportunities had arrived on the same day, as if the universe had decided to test her resolve all at once. She unfolded the letters once more, smoothing the creases with her thumb, and read each line with the focused attention of someone searching for a sign. It was Tom who noticed her first, crossing the square on his way to meet a colleague.

He altered his route without hesitation when he spotted the familiar look of quiet distress on her face. "You've been sitting here a while," he said gently, settling beside her. "Do you want to talk about it?" Zara exhaled slowly and passed him both letters without a word. Tom read them with care, occasionally glancing up at her as if measuring her expression against what he was reading. "These are both genuinely impressive," he said at last. "What's holding you back?" Zara looked across the square at the fountain, its water catching the light in restless, shifting patterns. "I've always wanted to push myself further," she admitted, "but leaving feels enormous right now." Tom was quiet for a moment before responding. "The things that feel enormous," he said, "are usually the ones worth doing."

After Tom left, Zara remained in the square for a while longer, watching the city move around her. She studied the old stone buildings that framed the open space, their worn facades telling stories of generations who had stood at crossroads of their own. The fountain continued its steady sound, indifferent to her dilemma, and something about its constancy helped to settle her thoughts. She reached a decision not in a single dramatic moment, but gradually, the way a fog lifts in the morning. She was going to accept the school's offer. She placed the letters back into her bag with deliberate calm, stood up straight, and cast one long look around the square. It had been the backdrop to her uncertainty, and now it would be the starting point of her next chapter. "I'll be back," she murmured to no one in particular, and walked forward into the rest of her day.
