    Zara's Big Choice

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Zara sat on a bench in the city square. It was a warm afternoon. There were many people around her. Some people walked quickly. Other people sat and talked. Zara had a letter in her hand. The letter was from a company in a big city far away. They wanted Zara to work for them. It was a very good job. The pay was good, and the work was interesting. But the city was very far from her home. Zara looked at the letter again. She felt happy and worried at the same time. She did not know what to do. This was an important decision. Zara called her friend Tomas. He answered quickly.

"Hello, Zara. How are you?" he asked. "I need your help," Zara said. "I got a job offer. It is in a city far from here." Tomas was quiet for a moment. "That sounds exciting," he said. "But you look worried." Zara nodded. "I am worried," she said. "My family is here. My friends are here. But this job is my dream." Tomas sat down next to her on the bench. "What does your heart tell you?" he asked. Zara smiled a little. "My heart says go," she said. "But I am scared." Tomas put his hand on her shoulder. "It is okay to be scared," he said. Zara stood up and walked slowly around the square.

She watched the children play near the fountain. She watched an old man feed the birds. She thought about her life here. It was a good life. She was comfortable and safe. Then she thought about the new job. It was a chance to learn and grow. She sat down again and picked up her phone. She called the company. "Hello, this is Zara," she said. "I want to accept the job." The person on the phone sounded happy. "Welcome to the team, Zara," they said. Zara smiled widely. She felt nervous, but she also felt proud. She made her decision, and it felt right.

    The Choice in the Square

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Zara had been sitting in the city square for over an hour, watching the world go by while her mind raced with thoughts she could not quiet. In her bag was a folded letter that contained a life-changing job offer from a well-known organization located in a distant city. The position was everything she had been working towards for years: a senior role in environmental research with excellent pay and real opportunities for growth. However, accepting it would mean leaving behind the community she had built over the past decade, including her aging parents, her closest friends, and the neighborhood she called home. She had already delayed her response twice, and the deadline was tomorrow morning. The weight of the decision pressed on her chest like a stone, making it difficult to breathe. She pulled the letter out, unfolded it carefully, and read the words once more, hoping they might somehow make the answer clearer.

"You have been staring at that letter since I arrived," said Tomas, her oldest friend, as he placed two cups of tea on the bench between them. Zara sighed deeply and admitted that she still had not made up her mind. "Part of me feels guilty for even considering it," she confessed, "because leaving would feel like I am abandoning the people who matter most to me." Tomas listened thoughtfully before responding. He reminded her that caring about others did not mean she had to sacrifice her own ambitions, and that the people who truly loved her would support whatever path she chose. "Besides," he added with a gentle smile, "distance does not have to weaken the bonds we share." Zara felt a lump forming in her throat because she knew he was right, even though the truth was hard to accept. She leaned back on the bench and watched pigeons circle the old stone fountain at the center of the square, letting his words settle in her mind. As the afternoon light turned golden, Zara stood up with a sense of quiet determination that she had not felt before.

She had spent so long weighing the risks that she had almost forgotten to consider what she truly wanted for herself. Walking slowly past the fountain, she noticed an elderly woman sketching the buildings around the square, completely absorbed in her art. Something about the woman's focus and contentment struck a chord with Zara, reminding her that fulfilment comes from pursuing what gives your life meaning. She returned to the bench, took out her phone, and dialled the number on the letter. "Good afternoon, this is Zara Henson," she said in a steady voice. "I would like to formally accept the position." When the call ended, she turned to Tomas with tears in her eyes and a wide, relieved smile on her face, finally at peace with the decision she had been so afraid to make.
