Zanele's First Day at the Beach Showers

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Zanele woke up early on her first day at her new job. She felt excited and a little nervous. She put on her uniform and looked in the mirror. Her uniform was a bright blue shirt and dark trousers. She ate a small breakfast and drank some water. Then she walked to the beachside shower area. It was a sunny morning and the air smelled like the sea. The shower area was large and very clean. There were many shower stalls in a long row. There was a small office near the entrance. Zanele walked inside and looked around slowly. She saw buckets, mops, and bottles of cleaning liquid on a shelf. There was also a sign on the wall with the rules.

She read the sign carefully and tried to remember everything. A woman named Rosa came to meet her. Rosa was the supervisor of the shower area. "Good morning, Zanele," said Rosa with a big smile. "Welcome to your first day!" Zanele smiled back and said, "Thank you. I am happy to be here." Rosa showed her where to find the cleaning supplies. She also showed her the schedule on the board. "You will clean the showers every two hours," said Rosa. Zanele listened carefully and wrote notes in a small book. Rosa showed her how to mop the floor safely. She said, "Always put a wet floor sign down first." Zanele nodded and said, "I understand." Then Rosa showed her the lost and found box near the door. "People sometimes forget their things here," said Rosa. Zanele looked inside the box and saw a pair of sunglasses and a towel.

After the training, Zanele started her first task. She cleaned the first shower stall carefully. She used a brush to scrub the walls and the floor. Then she mopped the floor and put it the wet floor sign outside. A beachgoer walked in and said, "Excuse me, is this shower free to use?" Zanele smiled and said, "Yes, it is ready for you now." The person said thank you and went inside. Zanele felt proud of her clean work. She moved to the next stall and started again. Rosa walked past and gave her a thumbs up. "You are doing a great job, Zanele," she said. Zanele felt warm and happy inside. By the end of her first morning, she had cleaned all the showers in the row. She sat down for her break and drank some cold water. She thought to herself, "I really like this job."

Zanele and the Morning Tide of Work

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Zanele arrived at the beachside shower area just as the sun was beginning to rise above the water, casting long golden shadows across the wet tiles. Her heart was beating a little faster than usual, though she reminded herself that nerves were simply a sign that something mattered. She had been hired as a facilities attendant just three days earlier, and this was the moment she had been preparing for. The air was heavy with salt and the distant sound of waves, and the shower area itself was already unlocked, its rows of clean stalls waiting silently for the first beachgoers of the day. Zanele checked in at the small office near the entrance, where a laminated schedule and a list of responsibilities had been left for her on the desk. She studied both documents carefully, determined to make a strong first impression.

Running her finger along the list, she noted that her duties included maintaining cleanliness, restocking soap dispensers, and logging any maintenance issues she discovered. Her supervisor, a calm and experienced woman named Rosa, arrived shortly after and greeted her with a firm handshake. "I know the first day can feel a little overwhelming," said Rosa, "but everything will start to feel routine before you know it." She walked Zanele through the storage room, pointing out where each cleaning product was kept and explaining the correct dilution ratios for the different surfaces. Rosa also stressed the importance of the wet floor sign, saying, "Safety isn't optional here, especially with wet tiles so close to an open beach." Zanele appreciated the clear guidance and asked a few thoughtful questions about the schedule and what to do if a piece of equipment was broken. Rosa seemed pleased by her attentiveness and said, "That kind of curiosity is exactly what we need on this team." By the time their walkthrough was finished, Zanele felt considerably more confident and ready to begin. Zanele's first solo task was to clean and prepare the row of showers nearest to the beach access path, where the morning crowd would arrive first.

She worked methodically, moving from stall to stall, scrubbing each surface thoroughly and checking that the water pressure and drainage were functioning properly. A beachgoer appeared at the entrance earlier than expected, carrying a surfboard under one arm and a towel over the other shoulder. "Sorry to bother you," the person said, "but is any of the showers available yet?" Zanele smiled and replied, "Of course, the first three are all ready for you." Once the beachgoer had gone inside, Zanele continued her work with a quiet sense of satisfaction. Rosa passed by a little later, glanced over the completed stalls, and offered a brief nod of approval. That small gesture felt more meaningful to Zanele than any amount of praise, because she could see it was genuine. She took her morning break sitting on a bench just outside the entrance, listening to the waves and thinking that, despite her nerves, she had handled her first day rather well.
