The Case of the Missing Lunch

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Linda had been looking forward to her lunch break all morning. As a nurse on a busy hospital ward, she rarely had a moment to herself, and the cheese and salad wrap she had prepared at home felt like a small but well-deserved reward. When the clock above the nurses' station finally showed one o'clock, she hurried along the corridor, her footsteps echoing on the polished floor. She pushed open the door to the staff room, went straight to the fridge, and pulled it open. Her bag was gone. Linda stared at the empty shelf for a moment, certain she must be looking in the wrong place, then checked every shelf twice before accepting the uncomfortable truth: someone had taken her lunch. Feeling a mixture of frustration and disbelief, Linda asked everyone she could find in the corridor whether they had seen her bag.

Tom, a fellow nurse she had worked with for years, shook his head apologetically and offered her half of his own sandwich, which she politely declined. A passing doctor suggested she check the other fridge near the supply room, but that search turned up nothing either. Linda leaned against the cool wall of the corridor, her stomach growling loudly, and tried to stay calm. She had skipped breakfast that morning because she was running late, which made the whole situation feel even more miserable. Just as Linda was resigning herself to a lunchless afternoon, she noticed a folded piece of paper tucked under the fridge door handle that she had somehow missed before. It was a handwritten note from Maria, a colleague who worked the early shift. "Linda, I am so sorry!" the note read.

"I grabbed your bag thinking it was mine. They are exactly the same color! I have left a container of pasta on the top shelf to make up for it. Please forgive me!" Linda let out a long breath and opened the fridge again, finding the container exactly where Maria had promised. As she sat down in the corridor to eat, she found herself smiling at the whole situation. "I really need to label my bag," she murmured, twisting the lid off the container.
