    Tomás Finds His Voice

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Tomás worked at a food delivery pickup point. It was a busy place. Many people came to collect their orders every day. Tomás liked his job. He was good at packing bags and checking orders. But today was different. Today, his manager asked him to speak to the other workers. Tomás had to give a short talk. He had to explain the new system for collecting orders. Tomás felt his heart beat fast. His hands started to shake. He looked at the door and wanted to go home. He took a deep breath. He said to himself, "I can do this." He walked to the front of the room. All the workers looked at him. Tomás felt very nervous. Tomás looked at his notes. His notes were on a small piece of paper. The paper shook in his hands.

He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He stopped. He took another deep breath. Then he started to speak. His voice was very quiet at first. One of his colleagues said, "Speak up, Tomás, we can't hear you!" Tomás felt his face go red. He looked down at the floor. Then he looked up again. He saw his friend, Priya, in the group. Priya smiled at him. Her smile was warm and kind. Tomás felt a little better. He started to speak again. This time, his voice was louder. He said, "The new system is simple. All orders go on the left shelf. Urgent orders go on the right shelf." The workers listened carefully. Tomás talked for five minutes. He explained everything slowly and clearly.

He answered two questions from his colleagues. His voice did not shake at the end. When he finished, the workers clapped. His manager said, "Well done, Tomás. That was very clear." Tomás felt surprised. He also felt very happy. He walked back to his place. Priya came over to him. She said, "You were great! I was so proud of you." Tomás laughed a little. He said, "I was so scared. My hands were shaking the whole time!" Priya said, "Nobody noticed. You looked very calm." Tomás could not believe it. He thought about the talk for the rest of the day. He felt proud of himself. He knew that next time, he would not be so nervous. He was already looking forward to the next time.

    The Moment Before the Words

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Tomás had always been comfortable working quietly in the background at the food delivery pickup point, checking orders and organizing shelves without drawing attention to himself. So when his manager pulled him aside one morning and asked him to brief the team on the new collection system, his stomach immediately dropped. He nodded and said, "Of course, no problem," even though every part of him wanted to refuse. As the start of the shift meeting approached, Tomás stood near the sorting counter, watching his colleagues gather around and chat easily with one another. His notes, written on the back of a printed order sheet, felt damp in his grip. He rehearsed the opening line in his head over and over, yet each time he imagined saying it aloud, his mind went blank.

The manager called the room to attention, and Tomás stepped forward, aware of every eye turning in his direction. He cleared his throat and began, but his voice came out thin and uncertain, barely carrying across the room. A colleague near the back cupped a hand to their ear, and Tomás felt a wave of heat rise to his face. He paused, looked down at his notes, and then deliberately looked up again, locating his friend Priya in the small crowd. She gave him a steady, encouraging nod, and something in that simple gesture steadied him. He drew a slow breath, reset his posture, and started again with a firmer voice, walking the team through the updated shelf layout step by step, fielding two questions with more composure than he had expected from himself.

By the time he wrapped up with a brief summary, the tremor in his hands had completely disappeared, and the room responded with a round of quiet applause. "Nicely done, Tomás," his manager said, looking genuinely pleased. Tomás returned to his station feeling a complicated mixture of relief, surprise, and quiet satisfaction. When Priya caught up with him a few minutes later, she said, "You pulled that off really well. I could tell you were nervous at first, but you recovered brilliantly." Tomás shook his head with a short laugh and admitted, "I nearly walked out before I even started." The experience had shifted something in him, and as he worked through the rest of his shift, he found himself thinking that the fear of speaking had always been louder in his imagination than it ever was in the room.
