    Tobias and the Old Book

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Tobias walked slowly along the street. He saw a second-hand bookstall. There were many old books on the table. The books looked dusty and worn. Tobias did not like old books. He thought old books were boring. He thought they had no good stories. He walked past the stall and did not stop. The man at the stall smiled at him. "These are great books," the man said. "You should look at them." Tobias shook his head. "No, thank you," he said. "I don't like old books." He walked away quickly. Tobias sat down on a bench near the stall. He was tired. He looked back at the bookstall. He saw a small blue book on the table.

The cover had a picture of a ship on it. Tobias loved ships. He stood up and walked back to the stall. He picked up the blue book. He opened the first page. The story was about a young sailor. The sailor had many adventures at sea. Tobias read two more pages. The story was very exciting. "This is really good," Tobias said quietly to himself. His eyes were wide. He could not put the book down. He read five more pages standing at the stall. The man watched him and smiled again. Tobias looked up at the man. He felt a little embarrassed. "How much is this book?" he asked.

The man told him the price. It was very cheap. Tobias paid for the book. He sat back down on the bench. He kept reading for a long time. He finished half the book before he went home. That evening, he told his friend about the bookstall. "I was totally wrong about old books," Tobias said. "They can be really exciting." His friend laughed. "I told you so!" his friend said. Tobias laughed too. The next morning, he went back to the bookstall. He wanted to find more old books. He looked at every book on the table carefully. He was very happy.

    The Book Tobias Almost Missed

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Tobias had always been dismissive of second-hand bookstalls. Whenever he passed one, he assumed the books were outdated, dull, and not worth his time. One afternoon, he strolled past a small stall packed with old paperbacks and hardcovers, their spines faded and covers slightly torn. The seller, a cheerful older man, called out to him. "You might find something you like, if you give it a chance," he said. Tobias gave a polite but unconvinced smile and kept walking.

He had made up his mind long ago, and he saw no reason to change it. A few minutes later, Tobias sat down on a bench to rest and found himself glancing back at the stall. A slim blue book had caught his eye, its cover showing a dramatic illustration of a ship battling rough waves. Since he had always been fascinated by the sea, he wandered back, telling himself he was only looking. He picked up the book, read the back cover, and then opened to the first page. Before he realized it, he had read several pages standing right there at the stall, completely absorbed in the story of a young sailor navigating both stormy seas and personal hardship.

"This is genuinely brilliant," he murmured, almost to himself. Tobias bought the book without hesitation, feeling slightly sheepish about his earlier attitude. He spent the rest of the afternoon on the bench, reading until the light began to fade. That evening, he messaged a friend and admitted, "I've been completely wrong about second-hand books. There are real treasures hidden in those stalls." His friend replied, "I've been telling you that for years!" Tobias laughed and made a mental note to revisit every bookstall he had ever ignored. Sometimes, he reflected, the things we dismiss most quickly turn out to be exactly what we needed.
