    The Wrong Way

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Soren was hungry. It was lunchtime, and he wanted to eat in the staff canteen. He walked down the corridor to the canteen door. The door was big and gray. There was a sign on the door. The sign said "Push" in large letters. But Soren did not read the sign. He grabbed the handle and pulled the door. The door did not move. He pulled again, harder this time. The door still did not move. Soren frowned and pulled one more time. Nothing happened. He looked at the door and felt confused. "Why is this door stuck?" he said to himself. Two people walked up behind him and waited.

Soren pulled the door again with both hands. His face turned red. A woman behind him said, "Excuse me, are you okay?" Soren turned around and smiled. "This door is broken," he said. "I cannot open it." The woman looked at the door. She pointed at the sign. "It says push," she said kindly. Soren looked at the sign. He read the word "Push" slowly. His face turned even more red. "Oh," he said quietly. He felt very embarrassed. He pushed the door gently. The door opened easily. The woman smiled and walked through the door. Soren followed her inside.

Inside the canteen, Soren sat down at a table. He put his hands over his face. A man at the next table looked at him. "Are you all right?" the man asked. "I just did something silly," Soren said. "I pulled the door when it said push." The man laughed in a friendly way. "Everyone does that sometimes," the man said. "I did it last week." Soren smiled and felt a little better. He stood up and went to get his lunch. The food smelled delicious. He got some soup and bread. He sat down and started eating. "Next time, I will read the sign first," he thought. He laughed quietly to himself and enjoyed his meal.

    Push, Don't Pull

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

It had been a long and tiring morning, and Soren could not wait to get to the staff canteen for his lunch break. He hurried down the corridor, already thinking about what he would choose to eat that day. When he arrived at the canteen entrance, he reached for the metal handle without pausing and gave it a firm pull. To his surprise, the heavy door refused to budge. Frowning, he adjusted his grip and yanked harder, convinced that the door must have been jammed. A small queue was starting to form behind him, and he could feel the curious stares of his colleagues on his back. He tugged once more, this time so forcefully that his hand slipped off the handle, causing him to stumble backwards.

Trying to hide his frustration, he muttered, "There must be something wrong with this door." A colleague named Lina, who had been watching from behind, stepped forward and tapped him lightly on the shoulder. "Soren, have you noticed the sign on the door?" she asked, barely managing to hold back a grin. He glanced at the door and, for the first time, noticed the word "Push" printed clearly at eye level. His cheeks flushed with embarrassment as he realized his mistake. "Well, that explains it," he said, letting out an awkward laugh while pushing the door open effortlessly. The small crowd behind him chuckled softly as they all filed through the entrance.

Lina patted him on the back and said, "If it makes you feel any better, I once spent a whole minute pulling that exact same door." Once inside the canteen, Soren grabbed a tray and joined the food queue, still feeling the warmth of embarrassment on his face. A man standing next to him must have witnessed the scene, because he leaned over and said, "I have done that more times than I would like to admit." Soren appreciated the kind words and started to see the humor in the situation. By the time he had collected his meal and sat down, he was already laughing about it with the people at his table. One of them joked, "We should all wear signs that say push or pull, just so we know how to deal with each other." Soren shook his head and smiled, realizing that a small moment of embarrassment had actually turned into a shared joke that brightened everyone's lunch. As he took his first bite, he promised himself that he would always read door signs from that day forward.
