    The Wrong Umbrella

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

It was a rainy afternoon. Nico finished work and walked outside. The rain was very heavy. He needed a taxi. He stood near the road and raised his hand. A yellow taxi stopped for him. Nico opened the door and got in. He was very wet. He put his bag on the seat next to him. He also had a black umbrella. He put the umbrella on the floor of the taxi. The driver smiled and said, "Where do you want to go?" Nico gave the driver his address. The taxi started to move. Nico looked out the window at the rain.

After a few minutes, Nico looked down at the umbrella on the floor. He noticed something strange. The umbrella was not his. His umbrella was old and small. This umbrella was new and big. It also had a silver handle. Nico picked it up and looked at it carefully. There was a small name tag on the handle. The name tag said "Lena." Nico did not know anyone called Lena. He asked the driver, "Did someone leave this umbrella in your taxi?" The driver looked in the mirror. He said, "Oh, yes! A woman was in the taxi before you. Maybe it is her umbrella." Nico felt worried. He wanted to return the umbrella to the woman.

Nico asked the driver, "Do you remember where the woman got out?" The driver thought for a moment. He said, "She got out near the big bookshop on Park Street." Nico made a decision. He said, "Can you take me there first, please?" The driver changed direction. They arrived at the bookshop. Nico got out of the taxi with the umbrella. He walked into the bookshop. He saw a woman looking for something in her bag. She looked worried. Nico walked to her and said, "Excuse me, is this your umbrella?" The woman looked at the umbrella and smiled. "Yes, it is! Thank you so much!" she said. Nico felt happy. He said goodbye and went back to his taxi. He still had his own old umbrella in his bag.

    Someone Else's Umbrella

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Nico had been waiting at the side of the road for nearly ten minutes, getting increasingly soaked in the heavy rain, when a taxi finally pulled over. He climbed in quickly, tossing his bag onto the back seat and placing his folded umbrella on the floor beside his feet. "Thank goodness," he muttered, wiping the rain from his face with the back of his hand. The driver glanced at him in the rear-view mirror and asked, "Rough day out there?" Nico laughed softly and gave the driver his home address. As the taxi merged into the slow-moving traffic, Nico leaned back against the seat and let out a long, tired sigh. He was looking forward to a warm meal and a quiet evening at home. A few minutes into the journey, Nico happened to glance at the floor and froze.

The umbrella resting against his shoe was not his. His own umbrella was a cheap, faded one with a wooden handle that wobbled when he opened it, but the one on the floor was sleek and sturdy, with a polished silver handle and a small leather name tag attached to it. He picked it up carefully and read the tag, which said "Lena" in neat handwriting. "Excuse me," Nico said, leaning forward, "I think the passenger before me left this umbrella behind." The driver raised his eyebrows and nodded thoughtfully. "Now that you mention it, there was a woman who seemed to be in quite a rush when she got out near the bookshop on Park Street," the driver replied. Without hesitating, Nico asked the driver to take him there first, even though it meant going out of his way. When they reached the bookshop, Nico stepped out into the rain, holding the unfamiliar umbrella above his head as he hurried inside.

He scanned the shop and quickly spotted a woman near the entrance, checking her bag with a frustrated expression on her face. Nico approached her and said politely, "I'm sorry to bother you, but would this happen to be yours?" The woman's eyes widened when she saw the umbrella, and her worried frown instantly turned into a grateful smile. "I can't believe it! I thought I had lost it for good," she exclaimed, taking it from him gently. She explained that the umbrella had been a gift from someone very special to her, which made Nico glad he had taken the trouble to bring it back. He returned to the waiting taxi feeling lighter than before, and as the car pulled away, he smiled to himself, thinking that sometimes a small detour can make all the difference.
