The Wrong Size, The Right Heart

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Lucía arrived at the hostel late in the evening. She put her bag on the bed and looked around the room. There were six beds in the dormitory. Two other travelers were already there. One was a young woman named Priya. The other was a man named Tobias. They smiled at Lucía and said hello. Lucía felt happy because they were friendly. She put her things in a small locker next to her bed. Then she sat down and took off her shoes. Her feet were tired from walking all day. Priya asked, "Are you hungry?" Lucía said, "Yes, a little." Tobias said, "There is a small kitchen downstairs." Lucía smiled and said, "Thank you." The next morning, Lucía woke up early. She saw a small package on her bed. It had a note on it.

The note said, "For you. I hope you like it. From Priya." Lucía was surprised. She opened the package slowly. Inside was a woolly hat. It was very big. It was also very bright orange. Lucía tried it on. The hat came down over her eyes. She could not see anything. She laughed a little. Tobias looked at her and laughed too. He said, "You look like a big orange mushroom!" Priya came into the room. She looked worried. She said, "I am sorry.

I did not know your size." Lucía said, "It is okay. It is very kind of you." Lucía kept the hat on her bed all day. She looked at it and smiled. She knew Priya was kind. She did not care about the size. In the evening, all three of them sat in the common room. Priya said, "I wanted to give you something because you looked cold last night." Lucía said, "That is so sweet." Tobias said, "Maybe we can find a smaller hat at the market tomorrow." Priya nodded and smiled. Lucía said, "I will come with you." They all laughed together. That night, Lucía put the big orange hat in her bag. She thought, "This hat is too big. But the feeling is just right." She was glad to have new friends. She felt warm, even without the hat.

A Hat Too Many, A Heart Just Right

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Lucía had been traveling for almost two weeks when she finally dropped her backpack onto the narrow bed in the hostel dormitory. The room held six bunks and smelled faintly of pine cleaning fluid and instant noodles, which she found oddly comforting. Two of the other beds were already occupied: Priya, a quietly cheerful woman who offered a wave from behind her book, and Tobias, who immediately asked whether Lucía had eaten and then pointed her towards the shared kitchen downstairs. By the time the three of them had shared a simple meal and a pot of weak tea, Lucía felt the particular relief that comes from finding easy company in an unfamiliar place. She fell asleep that night with the faint hum of distant traffic outside and the soft rustling of Priya turning pages in the bunk above. In the morning, Lucía woke to find a small, neatly wrapped package resting on her pillow.

A folded note attached to it read, "You looked cold last night. I hope this helps. From Priya." Touched by the gesture, Lucía unwrapped it carefully to find an enormous woolly hat in a shade of orange so vivid it practically glowed. She pulled it on, only for the brim to slide straight down over her eyes and nose. A poorly suppressed laugh from Tobias's bunk told her everything she needed to know about how she looked. Priya appeared in the doorway moments later, her expression caught somewhere between hope and horror.

"I picked it up from a stall near the station," she admitted, "but I honestly had no idea about sizing." Lucía pulled the hat up just enough to meet Priya's eyes and said, "It is honestly one of the most thoughtful things anyone has done for me on this trip." For the rest of the day, the oversized hat sat propped on Lucía's bedpost like a small, cheerful beacon. Although it was clearly unwearable, she found herself smiling every time she glanced at it. That evening, the three of them settled into the worn sofas of the common room, and Tobias suggested they visit the street market the following morning to find something that actually fitted. Priya looked relieved, and Lucía agreed warmly, though she quietly decided she would keep the orange hat regardless. It had already done its job, not by keeping her head warm, but by reminding her that a stranger's small, imperfect kindness can make an unfamiliar place feel immediately like somewhere worth staying.
