The Slowest Printer in the School

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Layla worked at the school reception desk. She started her job three months ago. She liked her job very much. Every morning, she arrived early and turned on the computer. She also turned on the old printer. The printer was very slow. It made a loud noise every time it started. Layla always waited a long time for her documents. Other people in the school knew about the slow printer. They often said, "That printer is so old!" Layla agreed with them. She wanted a new printer, but there was no money for one. So every day, she waited and waited. The printer was the slowest machine in the whole school. Layla just smiled and tried to be patient. One Tuesday morning, a student came to the reception desk. He needed a copy of his class schedule.

"Can I have my schedule, please?" he asked politely. "Of course," Layla said with a smile. She pressed the print button on her computer. Then she looked at the printer. It started to make its usual loud noise. The first page came out very slowly. The student looked surprised. "Is it always this slow?" he asked. Layla laughed a little. "Yes, it is always this slow," she said. "Please take a seat. It will take a few minutes." The student sat down on a chair near the desk. He waited and looked at the ceiling. Layla watched the printer push out one page. She sighed quietly. After five minutes, the schedule was ready.

Layla picked up the paper from the printer tray. She checked it carefully. Everything looked correct. She gave the paper to the student. "Here you go," she said. "Thank you for waiting." The student took the paper and looked at it. "Thank you very much," he said. "I hope you get a new printer soon." Layla laughed again. "I hope so too," she replied. The student left the reception area. Layla sat back in her chair. She heard the printer make one more strange noise. She shook her head and smiled. "Maybe tomorrow," she said to herself. Then she went back to her other work.

Layla and the Printer That Time Forgot

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Layla had been working at the school reception desk for almost a year, and in that time, she had developed a complicated relationship with the office printer. It was an ancient machine that groaned and shuddered every time she sent a document to it, as though it resented being asked to do its only job. On a good day, it would produce a single page in about forty-five seconds, but on a bad day, it could take several minutes just to warm up. Layla had complained about it to the head of administration more than once, but she was always told that a replacement was "being considered." She had learned to plan ahead, sending documents to print well before anyone actually needed them. Despite her frustration, she often found herself talking to the printer as if it could understand her, saying things like, "Come on, you can do it." Her colleagues thought this was amusing, but Layla believed the printer occasionally responded to encouragement. One particularly busy morning, a long queue had formed at the reception desk, and Layla was handling several requests at once. A teacher needed thirty copies of a worksheet for a class that was starting in fifteen minutes, and Layla could already feel the pressure building.

She loaded the paper tray, pressed print, and held her breath as the printer began its painfully slow process. "Is there any way to speed this up?" the teacher asked, leaning over the counter nervously. Layla shook her head and replied, "I am afraid this is its top speed. It has been like this since before I started working here." The teacher sighed deeply, pulled up a chair, and sat down to wait. Meanwhile, the printer produced one page after another at a pace that could only be described as glacial, while Layla tried to attend to the other people who were waiting. By the time all thirty copies had finally emerged from the printer tray, the teacher had been waiting for nearly twelve minutes and the class was about to begin. Layla quickly checked each page to make sure none of them had smudged or jammed, which was another common problem with the old machine.

"Here are your copies," she said, handing over the neat pile with an apologetic smile. The teacher grabbed them gratefully and rushed off down the corridor without looking back. Layla watched her disappear around the corner, then turned back to her desk, where two more people were already waiting. She glanced at the printer, which sat quietly now, almost looking innocent. "You are going to be busy today," she muttered under her breath. She took a deep breath, smiled at the next person in the queue, and prepared herself for another long day of waiting.
