The Old Friend at the Barbershop

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Imani walked into the barbershop on a quiet Saturday morning. The shop was small but clean. There were three chairs and two big mirrors on the wall. A radio played soft music in the corner. Imani sat down and waited for his turn. He picked up a magazine from the table. The magazine was old, but he did not mind. He looked at the pictures and turned the pages slowly. There were two other people waiting in the shop. One man read a newspaper. The other man looked at his phone. The barber was busy with a customer in the first chair. Imani felt relaxed. He liked this barbershop because it was always calm. He came here every month for a haircut. After a few minutes, the door opened. A tall man walked in.

He wore a gray jacket and carried a small bag. Imani looked up from his magazine. He stared at the man for a moment. The man looked very familiar. Then Imani smiled. It was Kofi, his old friend from school. They were in the same class many years ago. "Kofi! Is that you?" Imani said loudly. Kofi turned and looked at Imani. His eyes grew wide. "Imani! I cannot believe it!" Kofi said. He walked over quickly and they shook hands. "It is so good to see you," Imani said. "How long has it been?" Kofi asked. "I think it has been about ten years," Imani replied.

The two friends sat down together and started to talk. Kofi told Imani about his life. He worked as a driver now and he had two children. Imani told Kofi about his job at a small shop. They laughed about funny things from their school days. "Do you remember our old teacher?" Kofi asked. "Yes! He was very strict," Imani said with a laugh. The barber called Imani's name. It was his turn for a haircut. "Wait for me," Imani said. "We can get some tea after this." "Of course," Kofi said. "I am not going anywhere." Imani sat in the barber's chair and smiled. He was very happy. He lost a friend many years ago, but today he found him again.

    An Unexpected Reunion

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Imani had been sitting in the barbershop for about twenty minutes, flipping through a worn-out magazine and half-listening to the quiet hum of conversation around him. The shop was a simple place with three leather chairs, wide mirrors along the walls, and the gentle buzz of clippers filling the air. He had been coming here for years because he liked how peaceful it was, a place where he could sit, relax, and forget about the busy week behind him. There were a couple of other customers waiting on the wooden bench beside him, each lost in their own thoughts. The barber, a cheerful older man, was carefully shaping the hair of a young man in the first chair. Imani glanced at the clock on the wall and figured he still had a few minutes to wait. He leaned back, letting his mind wander to the tasks he needed to finish over the weekend. It was turning out to be an ordinary Saturday morning, or so he thought. The door swung open with a creak, and a tall man in a gray jacket stepped inside, glancing around the shop as though he were looking for a familiar face.

Imani looked up out of habit and felt a sudden jolt of recognition. The man's features had changed slightly over the years, but there was no mistaking that wide smile and those bright, curious eyes. "Kofi?" Imani called out, his voice full of disbelief. The man turned sharply, and his expression shifted from confusion to pure joy in an instant. "Imani! I haven't seen you since we finished school together!" Kofi exclaimed, rushing over to shake his hand firmly. They had been close friends as teenagers, always studying together, sharing jokes, and dreaming about what their futures might hold. Yet somehow, after they had gone their separate ways, they had completely lost touch with each other. The two of them immediately fell into conversation as if no time had passed at all.

Kofi explained that he had been working as an engineer in a nearby city and had only recently moved back to the area. Imani shared that he had been running a small business for the past few years and had just started to feel settled in his career. They found themselves laughing about memories from school, particularly their old teacher who had been famous for giving impossibly long homework assignments. "I've often wondered what happened to you," Kofi admitted, shaking his head with a warm smile. When the barber finally called Imani's name, he stood up and turned to Kofi with a grin. "Don't you dare leave before I'm done. We have years of catching up to do," he said. Kofi laughed and nodded, settling comfortably into a chair, clearly in no hurry to go anywhere.
