    The New Cook

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Andre worked as a cook in a busy restaurant kitchen. He liked his job very much. He enjoyed making food for people. Every morning, he arrived early and prepared vegetables and sauces. The kitchen was hot, but Andre did not mind. He was happy when customers liked his food. One day, the manager called a meeting. He told everyone about a new cook. The new cook's name was Leo. Leo started work the next day. Andre wanted to be friendly. He smiled and said, "Welcome to the kitchen, Leo." Leo did not smile back. He just looked at Andre and walked away.

Andre felt a little surprised, but he tried not to worry. Leo was not easy to work with. He was loud and often angry. He shouted at other workers in the kitchen. He never said "please" or "thank you." When Andre asked him for help, Leo said, "I am busy. Do it yourself." Andre felt frustrated. One time, Leo took Andre's pan without asking. Andre said, "Excuse me, that is my pan." Leo did not apologize. He just put the pan down and walked away. The other cooks were also unhappy with Leo. They talked about him during their breaks. Andre listened, but he did not say bad things about Leo. He wanted to find a better way to solve the problem.

He thought about it for a long time. The next week, Andre decided to talk to Leo calmly. He waited until the kitchen was quiet. Then he walked to Leo and said, "Leo, can we talk for a moment?" Leo looked at him but did not walk away. Andre said, "I think we can work better together. Can we try to help each other?" Leo was quiet for a few seconds. Then he said, "Maybe you are right." Andre was surprised but glad. After that day, Leo was a little nicer. He still was not very friendly, but he stopped shouting so much. He started to say "thank you" sometimes. Andre learned that talking to someone calmly can help. The kitchen became a better place to work. Andre was proud that he did not give up.

    Kitchen Tensions

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Andre had been working as a line cook in a busy restaurant kitchen for nearly two years, and he genuinely loved his job. He found satisfaction in the rhythm of chopping vegetables, stirring sauces, and plating dishes under pressure. The kitchen was a demanding place, but Andre had always believed that teamwork made even the hardest shifts bearable. So when the head chef announced that a new cook named Leo would be joining the team, Andre looked forward to having an extra pair of hands. On Leo's first morning, Andre introduced himself warmly and offered to show him around the kitchen. Leo barely glanced at him and muttered, "I already know what I am doing." Andre felt taken aback, but he reminded himself that starting a new job could be stressful, so he decided to give Leo some time to settle in. Unfortunately, as the weeks went by, Leo's attitude only seemed to get worse.

He would constantly criticize the way others worked, grab equipment without asking, and refuse to follow the cleaning schedule that the whole team had agreed on. Whenever someone tried to address the issue, Leo would either ignore them completely or respond with a sarcastic remark. Andre noticed that the atmosphere in the kitchen had changed significantly since Leo's arrival. People who had once joked around during prep time were now tense and quiet, and several cooks had even complained to the head chef about Leo's behavior. Andre, however, had been thinking about a different approach. Rather than complaining behind Leo's back, he wanted to have an honest and respectful conversation with him directly. One evening, after the dinner rush had ended and the kitchen was finally calm, Andre approached Leo near the dishwashing station.

"Leo, I have been wanting to talk to you," he said steadily. "I think there has been some tension in the kitchen, and I believe we could all work more smoothly if we communicated better." Leo crossed his arms and stared at Andre for a long moment, but he did not walk away. "Nobody here has bothered to ask me how I feel about anything," Leo admitted quietly. Andre realized that Leo had been feeling excluded and overwhelmed, which had caused him to put up walls around himself. They talked for almost twenty minutes that night, and although not everything was resolved immediately, something had shifted between them. Over the following weeks, Leo gradually became more cooperative, and Andre felt proud that he had chosen patience and understanding over frustration.
