    The Funny Conversation

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Maya was at a big sports stadium. She came to watch a game with her friend. Her friend was late, so Maya waited in the corridor. The corridor was long and quiet. There were posters of famous players on the walls. Maya looked at the posters and smiled. She walked slowly along the corridor. She could hear the crowd inside the stadium. The noise was very loud. Maya checked her phone, but there was no message from her friend. She decided to sit on a bench near the wall. The bench was old but comfortable. She put her bag next to her and waited. She watched people walk past her. Some people carried drinks and snacks.

Then Maya heard two voices behind a door. A man said, "I cannot find my left shoe!" A woman laughed and said, "You are wearing both shoes!" The man said, "No, I mean my lucky shoe. I always bring it to games." The woman said, "A lucky shoe? That is very strange." The man said, "It is not strange. I wore it to the last game, and our team won." The woman said, "Our team wins every week. The shoe is not lucky." The man sounded sad and said, "Please do not say that about my shoe." Maya put her hand over her mouth. She did not want to laugh out loud. The conversation was so silly. She tried to be quiet, but it was very hard. The man then said, "I found it! It was in my jacket." The woman said, "You put a shoe in your jacket?" The man said, "It is a small shoe. It is a toy shoe." Maya could not stop herself. She laughed very loudly. The door opened and the man looked out.

He saw Maya on the bench. He looked confused. Maya said, "Sorry, I heard your conversation. It was very funny." The man smiled and held up a tiny toy shoe. It was red and very small. He said, "This is my lucky shoe. Do you want to see it?" Maya nodded and looked at it. The woman came out too. She was laughing as well. She said, "He brings it to every game." Maya said, "I think it is cute." The man looked happy and said, "Thank you! Someone understands me." Then Maya's phone rang. Her friend was at the entrance. Maya said goodbye and walked away, still smiling.

    The Lucky Shoe Mystery

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Maya had arrived early at the sports stadium because she wanted to find her seat before the big game started. Her friend had sent a message saying she would be about twenty minutes late, so Maya decided to explore the corridor behind the main seating area. The corridor was surprisingly quiet compared to the roaring noise coming from inside the stadium, where thousands of fans were already settling into their seats. Large posters of athletes lined the walls, and the air smelled of popcorn and fresh coffee from a nearby stand. Maya strolled along, glancing at her phone every now and then, hoping for an update from her friend. When she spotted an empty bench tucked against the wall, she sat down and placed her bag beside her. She leaned back and enjoyed the brief moment of calm before the excitement of the game began.

Just as she was getting comfortable, Maya noticed two voices drifting through a slightly open door nearby. A man was saying in a panicked tone, "This is a disaster. I have searched everywhere, and I cannot find my lucky shoe!" A woman responded with a giggle, "You do realize you are already wearing both of your shoes, right?" The man groaned and explained that his lucky shoe was actually a tiny toy shoe that he had been carrying to every game for the past three years. He claimed that whenever he forgot to bring it, his favorite team would lose, and the woman kept teasing him by pointing out that the team had an excellent record regardless of the shoe. Maya was biting her lip, trying desperately not to burst out laughing, as the man grew more and more dramatic about his missing charm. Suddenly, he shouted with relief, "Wait, it is here! It was in my jacket pocket all along!" The woman replied in disbelief, "You have been turning this room upside down for ten minutes, and it was in your pocket the entire time?"

Maya completely lost control and let out a loud laugh that echoed through the corridor. The door swung open, and a tall man appeared, looking startled and holding a small red toy shoe between his fingers. Maya quickly apologized, explaining that she had not been trying to eavesdrop but that the conversation had been impossible to ignore. The man stared at her for a moment, then broke into a wide grin and held the toy shoe up proudly, saying, "At least someone appreciates the importance of a good luck charm." The woman stepped out behind him, shaking her head and laughing as she told Maya that this happened before every single game. Maya told them both that it was the funniest thing she had heard in a long time, and the three of them shared a good laugh together. Just then, her phone buzzed with a message from her friend, who had finally arrived at the entrance. Maya waved goodbye to her new acquaintances and walked away down the corridor, still grinning from ear to ear.
