    The Broken Bench

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Lucas walked down his neighborhood street one sunny morning. He saw something on the ground near the old bench. The bench was broken. Two of the legs were on the ground. Lucas looked at the bench and felt sad. Many people in the neighborhood liked to sit on that bench. Old people sat there in the afternoon. Children sat there after school. Lucas wanted to fix it, but he did not have any tools. He thought about the problem for a moment. He decided to ask his neighbors for help. He walked to the nearest house and knocked on the door.

A woman named Sara opened the door. "Hello, Lucas. What is wrong?" she asked. Lucas said, "The bench on our street is broken. Can you help me fix it?" Sara smiled and said, "I do not have tools, but my neighbor Tom has some." They walked together to Tom's house. Tom opened the door and listened to Lucas. "I have a hammer and some nails," Tom said. "Let me get them." Tom came back with his tools. Then another neighbor, Mei, saw them walking. "Where are you all going?" she asked. Lucas explained the problem, and Mei wanted to help too. They all went to the broken bench together.

Tom used the hammer and nails to fix the legs. Sara held the bench still while Tom worked. Mei found two flat stones to put under the legs. Lucas helped carry the heavy pieces. It was not easy work, but they all helped each other. After thirty minutes, the bench was strong again. Lucas sat on it and smiled. "It feels great!" he said. Sara laughed and said, "We make a good team." All the neighbors agreed. They were happy because they solved the problem together.

    The Street That Fixed Itself

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Lucas had been walking the same neighborhood street for years, but one morning something caught his eye that he had never noticed before. A large pipe beneath the pavement had cracked, and water was leaking steadily onto the road, forming a wide, muddy puddle that blocked half the path. Several neighbors were standing nearby, looking frustrated and unsure of what to do. "Someone should report this," one of them muttered, though nobody seemed willing to take the first step. Lucas realized that if nobody acted soon, the water could damage the nearby gardens and even reach some of the houses. He took a deep breath and said, "I don't know exactly how to solve this, but I think we can figure it out if we put our heads together." A few people looked at him with surprise, but slowly they began to nod. Within minutes, a small group had gathered around the puddle to discuss a plan.

A retired engineer named Hana suggested that they could reduce the water flow by turning off the main valve at the end of the street. Meanwhile, a young man called Daniel offered to dig around the pipe so they could see where the crack was. Lucas coordinated the effort, asking each person to contribute whatever skills or materials they had available. One neighbor brought shovels, another carried over sand and cloth to temporarily block the leak. Although they had never worked together as a group before, they quickly fell into a rhythm, communicating clearly and adjusting their approach whenever something did not go as expected. By the time the sun was high overhead, they had managed to slow the leak significantly and had cleared most of the mud from the road. Later that afternoon, a professional repair team arrived to permanently fix the pipe, but they were impressed by how much the neighbors had already accomplished.

"You've done most of the difficult work for us," the team leader said with a smile. Lucas felt a warm sense of pride, not because he had done everything himself, but because he had helped bring people together. Several neighbors who had barely spoken to each other before were now exchanging contact details and making plans to meet again. Hana suggested they could organize a regular gathering to look after their shared street. As Lucas walked home that evening, he thought about how a single broken pipe had turned strangers into a community. Sometimes, he reflected, the best solutions come not from one brilliant idea, but from many hands working towards the same goal.
