    Sorry for the Wait

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Emil lived in a big apartment building. There was a shared kitchen on the ground floor. Many people in the building used this kitchen. Emil liked to cook there on weekday evenings. One evening, Emil wanted to make soup for his neighbor, Tara. He told Tara the soup would be ready at seven o'clock. Tara was happy because she was very hungry. She said she would wait in her apartment. Emil went to the shared kitchen at six o'clock. He put his bag on the table. He opened the bag and took out vegetables. He had carrots, onions, and potatoes. He also had a big pot for the soup. He was excited to start cooking. He turned on the tap to wash the vegetables. But there was a problem.

The water did not come out of the tap. Emil tried the other tap, but it did not work either. He looked under the sink. He saw a small note on the pipe. The note said the water was off until eight o'clock. Emil felt worried. He could not make soup without water. He looked at the clock on the wall. It was already ten past six. He sat down on a chair and thought about what to do. He picked up his phone. He wanted to call Tara, but he felt bad. He waited a few minutes. Then he decided to go and talk to her. He walked slowly upstairs to her apartment. Emil knocked on Tara's door.

Tara opened it with a big smile. "Is the soup ready?" she asked. Emil shook his head. "I am sorry, Tara," he said. "The water in the kitchen is off tonight." Tara looked surprised. "Oh, that is a problem," she said. "The water comes back at eight o'clock," Emil explained. "So the soup will be late. It will be ready at about nine." Tara nodded slowly. "That is okay, Emil," she said. "Thank you for telling me." Emil smiled. "I am sorry for the delay," he said. "I will bring the soup to you as soon as it is ready." Tara thanked him again and closed the door. Emil went back downstairs and waited patiently in the kitchen.

    A Kitchen Complication

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Emil had promised his neighbor, Tara, that he would prepare a meal for her that evening, and she had been looking forward to it all day. He had planned to use the shared kitchen on the ground floor of their apartment building, which all the residents were allowed to use on a first-come, first-served basis. By the time he arrived at half past five with bags full of fresh ingredients, he was feeling confident that everything would go smoothly. He unpacked his things onto the counter and began organizing the ingredients for a vegetable stew. However, when he turned the tap on to fill his cooking pot, nothing happened. He tried both taps several times, but not a single drop of water appeared. A handwritten notice had been stuck to the wall beside the sink, and it explained that the building's water supply had been shut off for emergency pipe repairs until at least eight o'clock that evening. Emil stared at the notice in disbelief, realizing that his carefully planned timeline had just fallen apart completely.

He knew that Tara was expecting the meal to be ready by seven, so he could not simply wait in silence and hope for the best. After considering his options for a moment, he decided that the honest thing to do was to go upstairs and explain the situation to her face to face. When Tara opened the door, Emil could see that she had already set her small table for dinner, which made him feel even worse about delivering bad news. "I am really sorry, but there has been an unexpected problem with the water supply in the kitchen," he told her, keeping his tone calm and apologetic. He went on to explain that the repairs would not be finished for several more hours and that the stew would take at least another hour after that. Tara listened carefully and, although she looked a little disappointed at first, she quickly reassured him that it was not his fault. "These things happen," she said with a gentle shrug, "and honestly, a late meal is better than no meal at all." Feeling relieved by her understanding response, Emil returned to the kitchen and used the waiting time productively.

He chopped all the vegetables, measured out the seasonings, and prepared everything so that he could start cooking the moment the water came back on. At ten past eight, he heard the familiar sound of water rushing through the pipes, and he immediately got to work. The stew was bubbling away nicely by quarter to nine, filling the entire kitchen with a rich, warming aroma. When he finally knocked on Tara's door just after nine o'clock, she greeted him with a wide smile and told him the smell had already been drifting up through the building. "It was definitely worth the wait," she said as she took the first spoonful. Emil smiled back, grateful that a frustrating delay had not ruined their evening after all. He made a mental note to always check for building notices before making dinner plans in the future.
