Soren and the Seat That Started It All

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Soren works in a large office building. He has lunch in the staff canteen every day. The canteen is big and always busy at noon. Soren has a good friend at work. Her name is Petra. They always eat lunch together at the same table. The table is near the window. Soren likes that table because it is quiet there. One day, Soren arrives at the canteen early. He puts his bag on the chair next to him. He wants to save the seat for Petra. Then he goes to get his food. He takes a tray and joins the line. The line is long, so he waits for a few minutes. When Soren comes back to the table, Petra is already sitting there.

But she is not sitting in her usual seat. She is sitting in Soren's seat. Another person is sitting in the seat Soren saved for her. Soren feels confused. He looks at Petra and says, "I saved that seat for you." Petra looks surprised. She says, "I did not see your bag. I am sorry." The other person at the table looks uncomfortable. Soren sits down in a different seat. He does not say anything for a moment. Petra feels bad. She thinks Soren is angry with her. She tries to start a conversation, but Soren is quiet. He eats his food slowly. The canteen is loud around them. Neither of them speaks for a long time.

After lunch, Soren finishes his coffee. He looks at Petra and smiles. He says, "I am sorry I was quiet. I was not angry with you." Petra feels relieved. She says, "I really did not see your bag on the chair." Soren nods and says, "I know. It was my fault too. I should have told you I was saving the seat." Petra laughs a little. She says, "Next time, just text me!" Soren laughs too. They both feel much better now. They carry their trays to the tray return area together. Petra says, "Same table tomorrow?" Soren says, "Yes, and I will text you this time." They both laugh again. The misunderstanding is over. They are still good friends.

Soren's Awkward Lunch in the Staff Canteen

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Soren and Petra had been colleagues for nearly two years, and sharing a table in the staff canteen had become one of their small but reliable daily rituals. Every weekday at noon, they would meet at the same spot near the window, away from the noisiest part of the room. On this particular Tuesday, Soren arrived a few minutes early and, wanting to make sure Petra had her usual seat, he placed his bag on the chair beside him before joining the line for food. The line moved slowly, and by the time he returned with his tray, the situation at the table looked nothing like he had expected. Petra was already seated, but not in her usual chair. A colleague Soren barely recognized had taken the seat Soren had tried to reserve, and Petra had simply sat down in the nearest available spot. "I saved that seat for you," Soren said, and immediately regretted how sharp his tone sounded.

Petra blinked, clearly caught off guard. "I didn't see your bag," she said quietly. "I'm really sorry." Soren muttered something and sat down, but the atmosphere between them turned stiff and awkward. Petra made a couple of attempts to start a conversation, mentioning the morning's team meeting and then the weather, but Soren gave only short answers. He wasn't truly angry, just embarrassed by how the whole thing had unfolded, yet he couldn't seem to shake the tension. It wasn't until Soren finished his coffee that he found the right words. "I owe you an apology," he said, setting down his cup.

"I was being silly. I wasn't actually upset with you." Petra looked visibly relieved. "I genuinely didn't notice your bag," she told him. "I would never just ignore it." Soren nodded and admitted that he should have simply texted her to let her know he had arrived early and saved her a spot. "That would have taken about five seconds," Petra said with a grin, and Soren laughed at how easily the whole misunderstanding could have been avoided. They walked to the tray return area side by side, the tension completely gone. It was the kind of small, forgettable conflict that, once resolved, only reinforced how comfortable and honest their friendship really was.
