    Soraya and the Stubborn Artist

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Soraya worked in a small art gallery. She loved her job. Every day she helped visitors look at the paintings. She also helped the artists who showed their work there. One morning, an old man came into the gallery. His name was Mr. Osman. He was an artist. He had a big box of paintings with him. The box was very heavy. Soraya could see that. Mr. Osman walked slowly. He stopped many times. His face looked tired and red. "Can I help you with that box?" Soraya asked. "No, thank you," Mr. Osman said. "I am fine." But Soraya did not think he was fine. Soraya watched Mr. Osman carefully. He put the box down on the floor.

Then he picked it up again. Then he put it down again. He did this three times. "Please, let me carry it for you," Soraya said. "I do this every day. It is easy for me." Mr. Osman looked at her. "I can do it myself," he said. His voice was quiet but strong. Soraya smiled at him. She did not walk away. She stood near him. She waited. Then Mr. Osman tried to lift the box again. One of the paintings fell out. It hit the floor. Mr. Osman looked sad. "Oh no," he said quietly. Soraya picked up the painting quickly. She looked at it.

It was very beautiful. There were bright colors and soft shapes. "This is wonderful," she said. "Did you paint this?" Mr. Osman nodded. He looked proud. "Yes," he said. "I painted it a long time ago." Then he looked at the box. He looked at Soraya. "Maybe... you can help me carry it," he said slowly. Soraya smiled. "Of course," she said. They walked together to the back of the gallery. Soraya carried the box. Mr. Osman walked beside her. He told her about every painting. Soraya listened to every word. At the end, Mr. Osman said, "Thank you, young lady." Soraya felt happy. It was a good morning.

    The Weight of Independence

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Soraya had been working at the small art gallery for just over a year when she first met Mr. Osman, a retired artist who had finally agreed to display his work publicly for the first time in decades. He arrived one Tuesday morning carrying a large, battered wooden crate, clearly struggling under its weight as he moved in slow, careful steps across the gallery floor. Soraya noticed immediately that his knuckles had turned white from gripping the handle so tightly. "Good morning, can I take that from you?" she asked, stepping forward with a warm smile. Mr. Osman straightened up and fixed her with a sharp look. "I have been carrying my own work for forty years," he said firmly. "I have no intention of stopping now." Soraya nodded politely and stepped back, but she did not leave. She busied herself nearby, rearranging a small display of framed sketches, keeping one eye on Mr.

Osman as he struggled towards the exhibition room. He set the crate down twice along the way, each time pausing to catch his breath before forcing himself to continue. When one of the paintings slid out and clattered against the tile floor, they both froze. Soraya crossed the room in a few quick strides and crouched down beside it. The painting was extraordinary — layers of warm, earthy tones building into something that felt both ancient and alive. "This is remarkable work," she said softly, turning it towards the light. Mr. Osman stood very still for a moment, watching her face rather than the painting. "It was the first one I ever sold," he said quietly. "I bought it back last year."

Something shifted in the atmosphere between them after that. Soraya carefully handed the painting back to him, and Mr. Osman held it for a long moment before placing it gently on top of the crate. "Perhaps," he said at last, with some difficulty, "you could carry the crate while I hold this one." It was not quite a request, and not quite a question, but Soraya understood it perfectly. "I would be glad to," she replied simply. As they made their way to the exhibition room together, Mr. Osman spoke about each piece with the quiet authority of someone who had spent a lifetime perfecting his craft. Soraya listened attentively, asking questions at the right moments and staying silent at the right ones. By the time they had finished hanging the last painting, the two of them had reached a kind of understanding that neither had expected to find that morning.
