Sofia's New Friend at the Market

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Sofia walked to the busy market on a warm Saturday morning. She wanted to buy some fresh fruit and vegetables for the week. The market was very crowded and full of noise. People were talking, laughing, and calling out prices. Sofia liked the bright colors of the fruit and flowers. She carried a big cloth bag on her shoulder. She stopped at a table with red and yellow apples. She picked up an apple and looked at it carefully. The apple was shiny and smelled sweet. She put three apples into her bag. Then she walked to the next table. There were oranges, bananas, and grapes there. Sofia smiled because she loved grapes. She was happy to be at the market. The sun was warm on her face, and the air smelled wonderful. At the vegetable table, Sofia reached for some tomatoes. At the same moment, another young woman reached for the same tomatoes.

Their hands touched and they both laughed. "Oh, sorry!" Sofia said with a smile. "No problem! You can take them first," the young woman replied. Her name was Mia, and she had short brown hair and kind eyes. "Thank you. That is very nice of you," Sofia said. "Do you come to this market often?" Mia asked. "Yes, I come here every week. I love the fresh food," Sofia answered. "Me too! This is my first time here. Everything looks so good," Mia said. Sofia offered to show Mia her favorite tables in the market. Mia was very happy about that. "That sounds great! Thank you so much," Mia said.

They started to walk together through the busy market. Sofia pointed at a table with beautiful green vegetables. Mia smiled and followed her. Sofia showed Mia the best places to buy bread, cheese, and herbs. Mia was surprised at how many good things the market had. "I did not know this place was so wonderful," Mia said. Sofia laughed and said, "I felt the same way on my first visit." They bought some bread and shared a small piece together. They talked about their favorite foods and their favorite things to cook. Sofia learned that Mia loved to make soup. Mia learned that Sofia loved to bake cakes. "Maybe we can cook together sometime," Mia suggested. "I would like that very much," Sofia replied with a big smile. They exchanged phone numbers before they left the market. Sofia waved goodbye and walked home. She felt very happy because she made a new friend. It was a simple day, but it was one of the best days she had in a long time.

    An Unexpected Connection

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Sofia had been wandering through the busy open-air market for nearly an hour, weaving between tables piled high with colorful produce and freshly baked goods. The air was filled with the rich scent of ripe fruit, warm bread, and fragrant herbs, and vendors were competing for attention by calling out their best prices to anyone who passed. Although she visited the market almost every weekend, Sofia never grew tired of the lively atmosphere that surrounded her. She enjoyed taking her time, carefully selecting each item and chatting briefly with the sellers she had come to know over the months. On this particular morning, however, something unexpected was about to happen. As she squeezed past a group of shoppers gathered around a flower stand, she noticed a young woman standing alone near the vegetable section, looking slightly overwhelmed by the chaos. The woman was turning a map of the market over and over in her hands, clearly unsure of where to go next. Sofia felt a gentle pull of curiosity and decided to walk over and see if she could help. "Excuse me, you look a bit lost.

Can I help you find something?" Sofia asked warmly as she approached the woman, who looked up with visible relief in her eyes. "Oh, that would be wonderful! I have just moved to this neighborhood and I have never been to a market quite this big before," the woman replied, introducing herself as Mia. Sofia smiled and immediately offered to guide her through the market, pointing out which vendors had the freshest ingredients and where to find the best deals. As they walked side by side through the narrow paths between tables, they discovered that they had a surprising amount in common. Both of them enjoyed cooking, preferred spending their mornings outdoors, and had recently started learning to grow herbs on their balconies. Their conversation flowed so naturally that Sofia almost forgot she still needed to buy several items on her own list. Mia laughed when Sofia suddenly stopped mid-sentence to grab a bag of ripe tomatoes she had nearly walked past. "You really do know this market like the back of your hand," Mia said, clearly impressed.

By the time they had made their way through the entire market, both of their bags were heavy with fresh ingredients, and their conversation had not slowed down for a single moment. Sofia could not remember the last time she had connected with someone so quickly and so easily. "I have had such a lovely morning. I was honestly a little nervous about coming here alone," Mia admitted as they stood near the market entrance, preparing to go their separate ways. "Well, you do not have to come alone next time," Sofia replied with a grin, pulling out her phone so they could share their contact details. They agreed to meet at the same spot the following weekend, and Mia even suggested they could try cooking a meal together using everything they had bought. As Sofia walked home with a full bag and a light heart, she reflected on how a simple act of kindness had turned an ordinary Saturday into the beginning of what felt like a genuine friendship.
