Same Hard Hat, Same Big Dreams

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Yasmine walked into the break room and sat down at a long table. She was tired. She had been working on the construction site all morning. The break room was small and a little noisy. There were other workers sitting and eating lunch. Yasmine took out her sandwich and a bottle of water. She looked around the room. She did not know many people there. She had only started the job three weeks ago. A man sat down across from her. He had a yellow hard hat on the table next to him. He smiled at her. "Hello," he said. "My name is Dan. I am new here too." Yasmine smiled back. "I am Yasmine," she said. "Nice to meet you." She felt a little less alone.

Dan opened his lunchbox. He had rice and vegetables inside. Yasmine looked at her sandwich. "I wanted to bring hot food today," she said, "but I did not have time this morning." Dan laughed. "Me too!" he said. "I woke up late." They both laughed. Then Dan saw the small book on Yasmine's bag. "Is that a book about bridges?" he asked. Yasmine looked surprised. "Yes!" she said. "I love reading about bridges and big buildings." Dan's eyes went wide. "I have the same book at home!" he said. "I read it last year." Yasmine could not believe it. They started to talk about the book. They talked about famous bridges and tall towers. The time went very fast. Yasmine forgot about her tired legs.

After lunch, they walked back to the work area together. "What did you do before this job?" Yasmine asked. Dan told her he had studied engineering at a college. "I studied engineering too!" Yasmine said. She was very surprised. They also found out they both liked to draw building plans in their free time. "I draw plans every weekend," Yasmine said. "That is amazing," said Dan. "I do that too!" They stopped and looked at each other. They were both smiling. "It is funny," said Yasmine. "I thought I did not know anyone here." Dan nodded. "Me too," he said. "But now I think we are going to be good friends." Yasmine put on her hard hat. She felt happy. The afternoon was going to be much better now. She was glad she had sat down at that table.

    Blueprints and Common Ground

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Yasmine pulled off her dusty gloves and stepped into the break room, grateful for the twenty-minute pause in an otherwise relentless morning. The room was crowded with workers leaning over their lunchboxes and talking in small groups, and she felt the familiar sting of being the newcomer. She found a spot at the end of a long table and unwrapped her sandwich, half-listening to the conversations around her. A man sat down opposite her, setting his yellow hard hat beside his thermos with a quiet thud. "Mind if I sit here?" he asked, already settling in. "Of course not," said Yasmine, managing a polite smile. He introduced himself as Dan, and explained that he had joined the crew only days before she had. Something about that small detail immediately made the room feel a little less crowded.

As they ate, Dan spotted the worn paperback tucked into the side pocket of Yasmine's bag. "Is that the one on suspension bridge engineering?" he asked, leaning forward slightly. Yasmine raised an eyebrow. "You know it?" Dan pulled out his phone and showed her a photo of his own bookshelf, where the same title sat between two other engineering books. They both laughed at the coincidence, and the conversation quickly gathered speed. It turned out that they had both studied structural engineering, both kept sketchbooks full of building designs, and both had a habit of photographing interesting scaffolding whenever they passed a construction site on their days off. "At this point," said Dan, shaking his head with a grin, "I'm starting to wonder if we've crossed paths before without realizing it." Walking back to the work area after the break, Yasmine reflected on how differently the day had started compared to how it felt now.

That morning, she had arrived at the site dreading another solitary lunch and another afternoon of not quite belonging. Yet a single shared book, a few honest exchanges, and a mutual passion for structures had turned a stranger into someone who felt oddly familiar. "It makes you think," she said, as they approached the scaffolding. "You can work next to someone for weeks and never really talk." Dan nodded, fastening his hard hat. "Exactly," he said. "Sometimes it just takes sitting down at the same table." Yasmine smiled to herself and picked up her tools, already looking forward to tomorrow's break.
