    Petra at the Bakery

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Petra walked into the bakery on a sunny morning. She wanted to buy a cake for her friend's birthday party. The bakery was small but very clean. There were many cakes and breads behind the glass counter. Everything looked fresh and delicious. A woman stood behind the counter. She smiled at Petra. Her name tag said "Mara." Petra smiled back at her. "Good morning," Petra said. "Good morning! How can I help you?" Mara asked. Petra looked at all the cakes carefully. There were chocolate cakes, fruit cakes, and cream cakes. She wanted something special. "I need a cake for a birthday, please," Petra said. Mara pointed to a large chocolate cake.

"This is our most popular cake," she said. "Everyone loves it." Petra looked at the cake. It was very big and very dark. "It looks nice, but I think it is too big for us," Petra said politely. "We only need a small cake." Mara then showed her a small fruit cake. "How about this one? The fruit is very fresh today," Mara said. Petra thought about it for a moment. "That is a good idea, but my friend does not like fruit cake very much," Petra said. "I am sorry." Mara was not upset at all. She listened carefully to Petra. "No problem! Tell me more about what you want," Mara said. Petra felt comfortable because Mara was very kind. "I think a small vanilla cake would be perfect," Petra said. Mara went to the back of the bakery.

She came back with a small vanilla cake. It had white cream on top and little flowers made of sugar. "What do you think of this one?" Mara asked. Petra's eyes got big. "Oh, that is beautiful!" she said. "It is exactly what I wanted." Mara put the cake in a nice box. "I am glad we found the right one," Mara said. Petra paid for the cake. "Thank you for being so patient with me," Petra said. "I hope I was not too difficult." Mara laughed softly. "Not at all! It is important to find the right cake," she said. Petra picked up the box carefully. She walked out of the bakery feeling very happy. She knew her friend would love the cake.

    The Right Choice

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Petra had been planning her friend's birthday gathering for over a week, and she still needed to find the perfect cake. She stepped into a small bakery she had noticed on her way to work and was immediately greeted by the warm smell of freshly baked bread. A cheerful woman named Mara stood behind the counter, arranging rows of golden pastries on a glass shelf. "Good morning! What can I get for you today?" Mara asked brightly. Petra explained that she was looking for a birthday cake that would be suitable for a small group. Mara's eyes lit up as she began pointing out several options behind the display case. "I have just the thing for you," Mara said confidently, sliding a large, richly decorated chocolate cake towards the glass.

Petra studied it closely, already sensing it was not quite what she had in mind. "That certainly looks impressive," Petra began, choosing her words carefully, "but I was actually thinking of something a little more understated." Mara did not seem bothered at all and quickly reached for a fruit tart decorated with glazed berries. "This one has been getting wonderful reviews from our regular customers," she said enthusiastically. Petra hesitated before responding, not wanting to seem difficult or ungrateful for the suggestions. "I appreciate you showing me that, and it does look lovely, but I am not sure fruit would suit everyone's taste," she said with a gentle smile. Mara nodded thoughtfully and leaned on the counter. "You clearly know what you are looking for, so why don't you tell me exactly what you have in mind?" she suggested. Petra felt relieved that Mara had taken her honest feedback so well, and she described a simple vanilla cake with elegant but minimal decoration.

Within minutes, Mara had disappeared into the back room and returned carrying a small vanilla cake topped with smooth white cream and delicate sugar flowers. "I made this one earlier today, and I think it might be exactly what you have been describing," Mara said, placing it gently on the counter. Petra could hardly contain her excitement because the cake was absolutely perfect in both size and style. "That is wonderful! You have read my mind," Petra said, genuinely impressed by how well Mara had listened. As Mara carefully boxed the cake, she told Petra that she always preferred it when customers were honest about what they wanted. "It is much easier to help someone who speaks up politely than someone who just agrees and leaves disappointed," Mara explained. Petra thanked her warmly, picked up the box, and walked out into the morning sunshine, feeling confident that the birthday gathering would be a success.
