    Olena's Extra Copy

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Olena works in a small printing shop. She likes her job very much. Every day she helps many people. The shop is busy in the morning. Olena arrives early and turns on the machines. She checks the paper and the ink. The shop has big printers and a small desk. Olena stands behind the desk and smiles at every customer. One morning, an old man comes into the shop. His name is Mr. Baran. He looks very tired. He walks slowly to the desk. He puts some papers on the desk. He says, "I need twenty copies of this, please." Olena smiles and says, "Of course! I can do that for you right now." Olena takes the papers and goes to the printer. She puts the papers in carefully.

The printer starts to work. Mr. Baran sits down on a chair near the window. He looks at his hands. He seems worried. Olena notices this. She thinks, "He does not look happy today." The printer finishes and Olena counts the copies. She counts them one more time. She wants everything to be correct. Then she sees a problem. One page has a small smudge on it. The ink is not clear. Olena does not give this copy to Mr. Baran. She prints it again. She checks every page very carefully. She puts the good copies in a neat pile. Olena walks back to the desk with the copies.

She puts them in a paper bag for Mr. Baran. She says, "Here are your twenty copies. I also printed one extra copy for you, free of charge." Mr. Baran looks surprised. He says, "Oh! Thank you so much!" His face changes. He smiles for the first time. He looks much happier now. He says, "You are very kind." Olena feels warm inside. She says, "It is no problem at all. I hope your day gets better!" Mr. Baran picks up his bag and walks to the door. He turns around and waves. Olena waves back. She feels happy too. A small act of kindness made two people smile that day.

    One Extra Copy

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Olena has worked at the same printing shop for three years, and she takes quiet pride in doing her job well. On a gray Tuesday morning, the shop is steadily filling with its usual mix of customers when an elderly man named Mr. Baran shuffles through the door. He looks worn down, as though the day has already asked too much of him. He places a small bundle of papers on the counter and asks, in a low voice, for twenty copies. Olena notices the tension in his expression and makes a point of responding with a warm smile. "Of course," she says, "I'll have those ready for you in just a few minutes." She guides him to a chair by the window before heading to the printer.

While the machine hums quietly, Olena collects the printed sheets and examines each one with her usual care. She spots a faint smudge across the bottom of one page, invisible to a rushed eye but unsatisfactory to hers. Without hesitation, she reprints the page and checks it again before adding it to the pile. She straightens the copies into a tidy stack and slides them into a paper bag. It is then that a small idea comes to her. She prints one additional copy, slipping it in with the others, and carries everything back to the counter where Mr. Baran is waiting.

"Here are your twenty copies," Olena says, setting the bag on the counter, "and I've included a spare one, free of charge, just in case you need it." Mr. Baran looks up, clearly caught off guard by the gesture. The stiffness in his face softens, and a grateful smile spreads slowly across his features. "That's very thoughtful of you," he says, his voice noticeably warmer than before. As he picks up the bag and makes his way to the door, he pauses to thank her once more. Olena watches him go, feeling a quiet but genuine sense of satisfaction. She has not done anything remarkable, yet something small and human has shifted in that ordinary room.
