    Mia's Lunch Surprise

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Mia was on a long walk in the mountains. She walked for three hours and she was very tired. She was also very hungry. She saw a small rest point on the trail. There were some wooden tables and chairs outside. There was also a small food shop. Mia looked at the menu on the wall. There were pictures of the food next to each item. One picture showed a big, beautiful sandwich. It had fresh bread, green lettuce, red tomatoes, and cheese. It looked delicious. Mia smiled and pointed at the picture. She said to the person at the counter, "I want that sandwich, please." The person nodded and said, "It will be ready in five minutes." Mia sat down at a table and waited happily. After a few minutes, the person called Mia's name.

Mia walked to the counter to get her food. She looked at the plate and her smile disappeared. The sandwich was very small. The bread was flat and dry. There was one thin piece of cheese inside. There was no lettuce and no tomato. It looked nothing like the picture on the wall. Mia looked at the picture again and then looked at her plate. "Excuse me," she said. "This is not the same as the picture." The person looked at the sandwich and then at the picture. He said, "Sorry, but that is what we have today." Mia felt disappointed. She was too hungry to argue. She took the plate and went back to her table. Mia sat down and looked at the small sandwich again.

She was so hungry after her long walk. She took a bite. It did not taste bad, but it was not enough food. A woman at the next table saw Mia's face. The woman laughed and said, "The same thing happened to me yesterday." Mia laughed too. The woman offered Mia some fruit from her bag. Mia said, "Thank you so much. That is very kind." They sat together and shared the fruit. They talked about the trail and the beautiful views. Mia learned an important lesson that day. She decided to always bring extra food on her walks. Sometimes pictures are not the same as real life. But sometimes you make a new friend because of a bad sandwich.

    Not Quite as Advertised

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Mia had been hiking along a mountain trail for most of the morning, and her legs were aching from the steep climb. When she spotted a small rest point tucked between the trees, she felt a wave of relief wash over her. A few wooden benches surrounded a tiny food stall that had a large, colorful menu board propped up against the wall. Mia's eyes were immediately drawn to a photograph of a gourmet sandwich that featured layers of grilled vegetables, melted cheese, and crispy golden bread. Her stomach growled loudly as she imagined how satisfying it would taste after such a long and tiring walk. Without hesitating, she approached the counter and placed her order, already picturing herself enjoying every bite. The person behind the counter took her order with a quick nod and disappeared into the small kitchen at the back.

When her name was called a few minutes later, Mia practically jumped out of her seat with excitement. However, the moment she laid eyes on the plate, her enthusiasm vanished completely. Sitting in the center of the plate was a sandwich that bore absolutely no resemblance to the one in the photograph. The bread was pale and slightly squashed, and the filling consisted of a single thin slice of cheese with what appeared to be a wilted piece of lettuce. Mia stared at the plate in disbelief, then glanced back at the glossy photograph on the menu board, wondering if there had been some kind of mistake. She politely pointed out the difference to the person at the counter, who simply shrugged and explained that the ingredients they received that week had been limited due to a delayed delivery. Feeling frustrated but far too exhausted to make a fuss, Mia reluctantly accepted the sandwich and returned to her bench.

As Mia unwrapped the disappointing sandwich and took her first reluctant bite, a woman sitting nearby caught her eye and gave her a knowing smile. "I ordered the same thing yesterday, and I had exactly the same reaction," the woman said with a laugh, pulling a container of homemade trail mix from her backpack and offering some to Mia. Grateful for both the food and the company, Mia accepted and the two of them ended up chatting for nearly an hour about their favorite hiking routes and the unexpected challenges of eating on the trail. Mia realized that while the sandwich had been a total letdown, the conversation and the kindness of a stranger had turned her break into something genuinely memorable. She made a mental note to always pack her own snacks for future hikes, no matter how appealing the menu photos might look. As she waved goodbye to her new friend and continued along the trail, she could not help but smile at how the worst meal of her trip had led to one of the best moments. Sometimes the things that go wrong, she thought, are exactly what make an adventure worth remembering.
