Mia's Big Surprise at the Rest Point

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Mia was very happy. She was walking on a mountain trail with her friends. The trail was long and the sun was hot. After two hours, Mia was very tired and very hungry. She saw a small food stand at a rest point on the trail. There was a big sign next to the stand. The sign had pictures of food on it. One picture showed a big, round burger. The burger in the picture was tall and beautiful. It had a thick piece of meat, fresh green lettuce, and a bright red tomato. The bread was soft and golden. Mia looked at the picture for a long time. "That looks amazing," she said to her friend. "I want that burger!" Her friend looked at the picture too. "Yes, it looks really good," her friend said. Mia smiled and walked to the stand. Mia stood at the food stand. A man was working there. "Hello," Mia said. "Can I have one burger, please?" The man nodded and took her money.

Mia waited for a few minutes. She was excited. She thought about the big, beautiful burger in the picture. The man came back. He put a small box on the table in front of Mia. Mia opened the box slowly. She looked inside. The burger was very small. The bread was flat and a little brown. The meat was thin and gray. There was no lettuce. There was no tomato. Mia picked up the burger and looked at it. She looked at the sign. She looked at the burger again. "This is not the same," she said quietly. Her friend walked over and looked at the burger. Her friend tried not to laugh. "It is a little different," her friend said. Mia put the burger down on the table.

She felt a little sad. But then she thought about it. She was very hungry. She picked up the burger and took a big bite. It was not beautiful, but it was warm and it tasted good. Mia smiled a little. "It is okay," she said. "I am very hungry!" Her friend laughed. "You are right," her friend said. "Food always tastes better on a mountain." Mia ate all of the burger. She drank some cold water too. After she ate, she felt much better. She looked at the sign again. She shook her head and laughed this time. "The picture is very different from the real thing," she said. Her friend agreed. "Next time, do not look at the picture," her friend said with a smile. Mia laughed. "Good advice!" she said. Then they both picked up their bags and walked back onto the trail feeling full and happy.

    Mia and the Misleading Menu

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

After nearly two hours of hiking along a steep mountain trail, Mia and her friends were relieved to spot a rest point with a small food stand. A large, colorful sign was mounted on the side of the stand, displaying glossy photographs of the food on offer. One image in particular caught Mia's attention: a generously stacked burger, overflowing with crisp lettuce, thick slices of tomato, and a perfectly golden bun. "That is exactly what I need right now," she said, already reaching into her bag for her money. Her friends gathered around the sign, equally impressed by the mouth-watering photographs. The stand looked simple, but the pictures promised something spectacular, and after hours of walking in the heat, Mia was not about to question it. Mia placed her order with the man behind the stand, who gave a brief nod and disappeared to prepare her food. A few minutes later, he returned and set a small cardboard box on the counter in front of her.

When Mia lifted the lid, she was met with something that barely resembled the picture. The bun was flat and slightly overcooked, the meat was a pale, thin disc, and there was not a single leaf of lettuce or slice of tomato in sight. She held the burger up and looked back at the glossy sign, then at the burger again. "I think there has been some kind of mistake," she said carefully. Her friend, who was struggling to keep a straight face, leaned in for a closer look. "It is technically a burger," her friend said, trying to sound helpful. Mia set the disappointing burger down and took a moment to collect herself. She had been looking forward to that meal for the last hour of the hike, and the reality was a considerable let-down.

However, hunger has a way of changing one's perspective, and after staring at it for a few seconds, she picked it up and took a determined bite. It was far from glamorous, but it was warm, filling, and surprisingly tasty. "You know what, it is actually not bad," she admitted, a smile spreading across her face. Her friend laughed and said, "Food always tastes better when you have earned it." Mia nodded and finished every last bite. As they picked up their bags to continue along the trail, Mia cast one final glance at the sign and shook her head with a grin. "Lesson learned," she said. "Never trust a food photograph."
