    The Virtue of Waiting

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Late at night, Mei stepped into the bright, almost empty convenience store, picking up a basket and heading straight for the shelves. She collected a few essentials and made her way to the checkout, where she found herself standing behind an elderly man who was moving with great difficulty. He placed each item on the counter with trembling hands, pausing between each one to catch his breath. Mei noticed immediately that this was going to take a while. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other and reminded herself that she had no urgent reason to rush. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, and somewhere at the back of the store a refrigerator buzzed steadily. As the minutes passed, Mei studied the old man more carefully.

His coat was slightly worn at the elbows, and he squinted at each item as though reading the label was an effort that required his full concentration. The cashier, a young woman with tired eyes, handled the situation with quiet professionalism, neither rushing him nor showing the slightest trace of irritation. Mei found herself admiring both of them. She thought about all the times she had felt frustrated by small delays and wondered why she had ever let them bother her. "He has lived a long life," she thought to herself, "and he deserves to take up a little space in this world." When the old man finally finished, he murmured a soft "thank you" to the cashier and shuffled out of the store, clutching his bag carefully. Mei stepped forward and placed her items on the counter.

"I'm really sorry about that," the cashier said, looking slightly embarrassed. "Please don't be," Mei replied warmly. "He was taking his time, and that's perfectly fine." The cashier looked at her with an expression of quiet gratitude. "Not everyone sees it that way," she admitted. Mei smiled and picked up her bag. Walking out into the cool night air, she felt a deep sense of satisfaction, not just because her shopping was done, but because she had chosen kindness over impatience.
