    Maya Hears Something Funny

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Maya loved going to the stadium. She always felt excited when she walked through the big doors. Today, she was at a big sports match. She arrived early, before many other people. The corridor inside the stadium was long and wide. There were bright lights on the ceiling. Maya walked slowly and looked around her. She had a ticket in her hand. Her seat was at the far end of the corridor. She was happy because she had a very good seat. She wore her favorite blue jacket. She carried a small bag on her shoulder. The corridor smelled like popcorn and hot drinks. Maya smiled to herself.

Then Maya heard voices behind her. Two men were walking and talking loudly. They did not see her in front of them. The first man said, "I told you, a cat cannot play football!" The second man laughed and said, "But my cat is very fast!" Maya stopped walking. She turned her head a little. She did not want them to see her listening. The first man said, "Fast is not enough. Does your cat know the rules?" The second man thought for a moment. Then he said, "Well, she knows when to stop for dinner." Maya put her hand over her mouth. She did not want to laugh out loud. Her shoulders started to shake. She tried very hard to keep quiet. Maya reached her seat and sat down. She was still smiling from the funny conversation.

The man next to her saw her happy face. He asked, "Are you okay? You look very happy." Maya nodded and said, "Yes, I just heard something very funny." The man smiled and said, "Tell me!" So Maya told him the story about the cat and football. The man laughed loudly. People near them turned to look. Maya laughed too. It felt good to share the funny moment. The match started soon after that. The players ran onto the field. The crowd cheered very loudly. But Maya still thought about the cat and its dinner time. She laughed quietly to herself one more time.

The Conversation Maya Could Not Ignore

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Maya had always enjoyed the electric atmosphere of a packed stadium, but today's experience was going to be memorable for a completely different reason. She arrived well ahead of the other spectators and strolled through the long, echoing corridor beneath the stands, savouring the familiar smell of popcorn drifting through the air. The corridor was almost empty at that hour, and the sound of her footsteps bounced softly off the concrete walls. She was in no particular hurry, enjoying a rare moment of calm before the noise of the crowd took over. Her ticket was tucked safely in her jacket pocket, and her seat was near the far end of the corridor. She glanced at the signs above the doorways as she walked, making sure she was heading in the right direction. It was then that she became aware of two voices growing louder behind her.

Two men were approaching at a brisk pace, deep in what seemed to be a very serious discussion. "I keep telling you," the first man said firmly, "a cat simply cannot play football." The second man sounded completely unbothered. "But you haven't seen my cat," he replied. "She's remarkably quick." Maya slowed her pace slightly, careful not to turn around and reveal that she was listening. "Speed alone isn't the issue," the first man continued, sounding almost frustrated. "Does she understand the offside rule?" There was a brief pause, and then the second man said, in a perfectly calm voice, "Well, she always knows when it's time for dinner." Maya pressed her lips together and stared straight ahead, her shoulders shaking silently as she struggled to contain her laughter. By the time Maya reached her seat, she had managed to compose herself, though a wide grin remained on her face.

The woman sitting beside her noticed immediately and gave her a curious look. "You seem very cheerful," she remarked. "Did something happen?" Maya nodded, still smiling, and recounted the overheard exchange with as much detail as she could remember. The woman burst out laughing, drawing a few surprised glances from nearby fans who were still settling in. When the match finally kicked off and the crowd erupted around them, Maya found it almost impossible to concentrate fully on the game. Every now and then, the image of a cat patiently waiting for its dinner popped into her mind, and she would smile all over again. It had been, without question, the funniest thing she had overheard in a very long time.
