    Mateo Returns the Wrong Seeds

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Mateo liked to spend his free time in the community garden. He had a small piece of land there. He grew vegetables and flowers every year. Last week, he went to a garden shop near his home. He wanted to buy tomato seeds for the spring. The shop was small but it had many things. Mateo looked at the shelves carefully. He found a packet of seeds and paid for it. He put the packet in his bag and walked home. Later that evening, he opened the packet. He looked at the seeds closely. They were not tomato seeds. They were pepper seeds. Mateo checked the receipt in his bag.

He decided to return the seeds the next day. He was not angry, but he needed the right seeds. The next morning, Mateo went back to the shop. He brought the pepper seeds and the receipt with him. A young woman was working behind the counter. Mateo walked to her and smiled politely. He said, "Excuse me, I bought these seeds yesterday." The woman looked at him and said, "Of course, how can I help you?" Mateo explained, "I wanted tomato seeds, but these are pepper seeds." He showed her the packet and the receipt. The woman checked the receipt carefully. She said, "I am sorry about that. Let me find the right ones for you." She went to the shelf and picked up a packet of tomato seeds. She brought it back to the counter. Mateo thanked her and said, "I really appreciate your help." The woman smiled and said, "You are welcome." After the shop, Mateo went straight to the community garden. He was happy because he had the correct seeds now.

He opened the new packet and looked at the seeds inside. They were small and round. He made small holes in the soil with his fingers. He put one seed in each hole carefully. Then he covered the seeds with soil. He watered them gently with a small can. Other gardeners were working nearby. One of them, a friendly old man, waved to Mateo. Mateo waved back and smiled. He told the old man about his trip to the shop. The old man laughed and said, "That happens to everyone sometimes." Mateo felt good about his day. He sat on a bench and looked at his garden with a smile. He knew the tomatoes would grow well in the warm weather.

Mateo and the Mismatched Garden Tools

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Mateo had been volunteering at the community garden for several months, and he enjoyed every moment of it. He was responsible for looking after a section of raised beds where he grew herbs and seasonal vegetables. One afternoon, while preparing the soil for a new planting season, he realized that his hand trowel had become too worn to use properly. He decided to visit a nearby garden supplies shop to purchase a replacement. After browsing the selection for a while, he chose a trowel that seemed sturdy and well-made. He paid for it, tucked the receipt into his wallet, and headed back to the garden feeling satisfied. However, when he unwrapped the tool at home that evening, he noticed that the handle was cracked near the base, making it unsuitable for any serious digging. Disappointed but calm, Mateo decided he would return it to the shop the following morning and politely ask for an exchange. The next day, Mateo arrived at the shop shortly after it opened, carrying the faulty trowel in its original packaging along with the receipt.

A shop assistant greeted him at the entrance, and Mateo responded with a warm smile before explaining his situation. "Good morning. I purchased this trowel yesterday, but unfortunately the handle has a crack in it," he said, placing the item on the counter. The assistant examined the tool carefully and agreed that it was indeed damaged. "I do apologize for the inconvenience. Would you prefer a replacement or a refund?" she asked. Mateo replied that he would appreciate a replacement, as he needed the tool for his work at the community garden. The assistant quickly found an identical trowel, checked it thoroughly for any defects, and handed it to Mateo with a sincere apology. Mateo thanked her warmly and mentioned how impressed he was with the helpful service.

With the new trowel safely in his bag, Mateo walked to the community garden, feeling relieved that the matter had been resolved so smoothly. Several other gardeners were already there, tending to their plots and chatting in the gentle morning sunlight. Mateo knelt beside his raised bed and began turning the soil with his new tool, which worked perfectly. A fellow gardener named Lina noticed the shiny new trowel and asked about it. Mateo explained what had happened, and Lina nodded thoughtfully, saying that she had once had a similar experience with a watering can that leaked from the moment she brought it home. They both agreed that keeping receipts and being polite when returning items usually led to a positive outcome. As Mateo continued working, he reflected on how a small inconvenience had turned into a pleasant interaction, reminding him that most problems could be solved with patience and good communication.
