Marco's Speaking Exam at the Bookshop

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Marco walks into the bookshop. It is quiet and calm. He looks around. There are books everywhere. The shelves are tall and full. Marco likes the smell of old books. He feels a little nervous today. He has an important English speaking exam. The exam will happen right here, in the bookshop. A small table and two chairs are near the window. Marco takes a deep breath. He sits down in one of the chairs. He puts his bag on the floor. He takes out a pen and a small notebook. He waits for the examiner. The examiner comes in. Her name is Ms. Rios. She smiles at Marco. "Hello, Marco.

Are you ready to begin?" she asks. Marco nods. "Yes, I think so," he says. His voice is a little shaky. Ms. Rios speaks in a kind and clear voice. She asks Marco to talk about his daily routine. Marco starts to speak. He talks about his morning. He says, "I wake up early and I eat breakfast at home." He forgets one word. He stops for a moment. Then he says, "Sorry, I mean I drink coffee too." Ms. Rios writes some notes. She nods and smiles. Marco feels a little better. She then asks him to describe the bookshop. Marco looks around slowly. He says, "It is quiet and the books are very old." He uses his hands to help explain. Ms. Rios listens carefully.

The exam finishes after about twenty minutes. Ms. Rios closes her notebook. "Thank you, Marco. You did very well," she says. Marco smiles. He feels very happy. "Really? I made some mistakes," he says. "Everyone makes mistakes," Ms. Rios tells him. "What is important is that you keep speaking." Marco picks up his bag. He says, "Thank you for being so kind." He walks out of the bookshop slowly. Outside, he takes a big breath of fresh air. He calls his friend on his cell phone. "I did it!" he says. His friend laughs and says, "I knew you could do it!" Marco feels proud. He smiles all the way home. He is already excited to practice more English.

Marco Faces His Speaking Exam Among the Bookshelves

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Marco arrives at the bookshop fifteen minutes early, which gives him just enough time to settle his nerves. The shop is peaceful and still, with the faint smell of old paper drifting through the air. Rows of tall wooden shelves line the walls, and a small table has been set up near the window for the exam. Marco sits down, places his bag beside the chair, and reminds himself to breathe slowly. He has been preparing for this English speaking exam for several weeks, practicing responses in front of his bathroom mirror every evening. Even so, as he watches the second hand on the clock above the fiction section, his stomach tightens. He tells himself that feeling nervous is perfectly normal and that the most important thing is to communicate clearly, not perfectly. The examiner, Ms. Rios, enters the bookshop quietly and greets Marco with a warm, professional smile. "Good morning, Marco.

I hope you're feeling ready," she says, setting her notebook on the table. The exam begins with a question about his daily routine, and Marco speaks steadily at first, choosing his words with care. When he loses track of a phrase halfway through a sentence, he pauses, rephrases, and continues without apologizing unnecessarily. Ms. Rios then asks him to describe the bookshop around him, and Marco finds this easier than expected. He talks about the atmosphere, the arrangement of the shelves, and the quality of light coming through the window. His language becomes more natural and flowing as the conversation continues, and by the time Ms. Rios asks her final question, Marco is leaning forward slightly in his chair, genuinely engaged. Ms. Rios closes her notebook and looks up with an approving expression.

"Thank you, Marco. You communicated very effectively today," she says. Marco exhales slowly, feeling a mix of relief and quiet pride. He admits that he stumbled over a few phrases, but Ms. Rios reassures him that confident recovery from a mistake is itself a sign of a capable speaker. As Marco picks up his bag and thanks her, he realizes that the anxiety he felt walking in has almost completely disappeared. He steps out of the bookshop into the fresh air and immediately calls his friend on his cell phone. "I actually enjoyed it toward the end," he says, laughing. "That's how you know you're improving," his friend replies. Marco smiles, already thinking about how he will practice for the next level.
