    Lucas and the Blocked Drain

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Lucas lived on a quiet neighborhood street. He liked to walk outside every morning. One day, he saw a big puddle in the road. The puddle was very wide. Water could not move because the drain was blocked. Leaves and rubbish were inside the drain. Cars could not drive past easily. Some people walked around the puddle. Lucas looked at the problem. He felt worried. He wanted to help. He did not know what to do alone. He decided to talk to his neighbors. He knocked on the door next to his house. A woman named Sara opened the door. "Hello, Sara," said Lucas. "There is a big puddle outside.

The drain is blocked. Can you help me?" Sara looked at the puddle. "Yes, I can see it," she said. "It is a big problem." Sara got a broom from her home. Lucas got a bucket and some gloves. They walked to the drain together. Lucas put on his gloves. He pulled the leaves out of the drain slowly. Sara used the broom to push the rubbish away. A neighbor named Tom saw them working. "Can I help?" Tom asked. "Yes, please!" said Lucas and Sara. Tom brought a second bucket. He helped to carry the rubbish away. They all worked together for about thirty minutes. Soon, the water started to move. It went slowly into the drain.

Then it moved faster and faster. The puddle got smaller and smaller. Finally, the road was clear. "We did it!" said Lucas happily. Sara smiled. "It was easy because we worked together," she said. Tom nodded. "One person cannot do everything alone," he said. Lucas felt very happy. He thanked Sara and Tom. They all felt proud. The street looked clean and safe again. Lucas learned something important that day. He learned that neighbors can help each other. Small problems are easier to solve together. He smiled and walked home.

    The Street That Came Together

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Lucas noticed the problem on his way home from the market one Tuesday afternoon. A wide, murky puddle had spread across the entire width of the street, forcing pedestrians onto the narrow pavement and making it impossible for vehicles to pass without splashing everyone nearby. He crouched down to inspect the drain at the edge of the road and immediately discovered the cause: a dense tangle of leaves, mud, and compacted rubbish had completely sealed the opening. Lucas stood up and glanced along the street, hoping someone else had already reported the issue, but it was clear that nobody had taken action. Frustrated but determined, he decided that if he waited for someone else to solve it, the flooding would only get worse. He straightened his jacket, took a steady breath, and went to knock on the doors of his nearest neighbors. The first person to answer was a woman named Sara, who listened carefully and agreed without hesitation to lend a hand.

Within a few minutes, she had returned with a stiff broom, a pair of rubber gloves, and a look of quiet confidence. As they began working at the drain, a retired man named Tom spotted them from his window and came outside carrying a heavy-duty bucket and a small garden trowel. "I have been watching that puddle grow for two days," Tom admitted, shaking his head. "I kept thinking someone else would deal with it." Lucas smiled and replied, "That is exactly what I thought this morning." The three neighbors quickly developed a simple system: Lucas and Tom took turns scooping out the compacted debris by hand and with the trowel, while Sara swept loose material away from the drain opening so it could not fall back in. It took them nearly forty minutes of steady effort, but the results were unmistakable. As the last of the blockage was cleared, the trapped water began draining away with a satisfying gurgle, and the puddle shrank rapidly until the road surface was visible again. Passing residents paused to applaud and offer encouraging words, and a young couple even brought out cold drinks for the three workers.

"I never imagined clearing a drain could feel this rewarding," Sara said, peeling off her gloves and laughing. Tom nodded thoughtfully and replied, "It is not really about the drain, is it? It is about choosing not to look away." Lucas looked at the clean, open street and felt a quiet but deep sense of satisfaction. He realized that the solution had always been simple, but it had required more than one person to see it through. As he said goodbye to his neighbors, he made a quiet promise to himself: next time he noticed a problem on the street, he would not wait for someone else to act first.
