Linh's First Time at the Gate

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Linh sat in the airport departure lounge. It was big and very busy. There were lots of people all around her. Some people were reading. Some people were looking at their phones. Linh looked at the big screens on the wall. She saw words like 'Boarding' and 'Delayed'. She did not know what these words meant. She had a paper ticket in her hand. She looked at it again and again. She felt a little nervous. This was her first time traveling alone. She took a deep breath. She told herself everything was okay. She watched the other passengers. She tried to feel calm. A woman sat next to Linh.

The woman smiled at her. "Is this your first time flying?" the woman asked. "Yes," said Linh. "I am a little scared." The woman laughed softly. "Don't worry," she said. "It gets easier every time." The woman pointed to the big screen. "When it says 'Boarding', you go to the gate," she explained. "Show your ticket to the staff there." Linh nodded slowly. "Thank you," she said. She felt a little better now. The woman was very kind. Linh looked at the screen again. She waited for the word 'Boarding' to appear. She felt more ready now. Soon, the screen changed. It said 'Boarding' next to Linh's flight number. Linh stood up quickly.

She picked up her bag. She walked to the gate. A staff member stood at the door. "Ticket, please," the staff member said. Linh gave her ticket to him. He scanned it with a small machine. The machine made a beeping sound. "Thank you. Have a good flight," he said with a smile. Linh smiled back. She walked through the door. She felt proud of herself. She had done something new. She had done it on her own. She was ready for her journey.

Linh Takes Off on Her Own

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Linh sat in the busy airport departure lounge, gripping her boarding pass with both hands. All around her, seasoned travelers moved with practiced confidence, navigating the space as though they had done it a thousand times before. The large display screens flickered with updates, showing words like 'Boarding', 'Delayed', and 'Final Call', none of which she fully understood yet. Although she had researched the process carefully beforehand, the reality of being there alone felt far more overwhelming than she had expected. She studied the other passengers, hoping to pick up clues about what she was supposed to do next. Each time the screens refreshed, she leaned forward slightly, watching for her flight number to appear. She took a slow, steady breath and reminded herself that every experienced traveler had once been exactly where she was now.

A woman sitting beside her noticed her anxious expression and offered a reassuring smile. "First time flying solo?" the woman asked gently. "Is it that obvious?" Linh replied with a nervous laugh. The woman explained that when the screen showed 'Boarding' next to her flight number, she should make her way to the gate printed on her pass and present it to the staff there. "They'll scan it and wave you through, and that's really all there is to it," she added encouragingly. Linh thanked her, feeling the tension in her shoulders begin to ease. It was such a simple explanation, yet hearing it spoken aloud made the whole process feel far more manageable.

When the screen finally updated to show 'Boarding', Linh gathered her belongings and walked purposefully towards her gate, her earlier anxiety replaced by quiet determination. The staff member at the entrance greeted her with a professional smile, scanned her boarding pass, and wished her a pleasant flight without any fuss. As Linh stepped through the gate and into the boarding corridor, she felt a genuine sense of achievement wash over her. She had navigated an unfamiliar process in an unfamiliar place, relying on her own preparation and the unexpected kindness of a stranger. Whatever came next, she told herself, she was more capable than she had believed just one hour ago.
