    Linh Learns to Draw

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Linh sat in the airport departure lounge. She had a long wait for her flight. The screen on the wall showed that her plane was delayed. She looked around the big room. There were many people sitting in chairs. Some people were sleeping. Other people were looking at their phones. Linh felt bored. She did not have a book to read. She opened her bag and found a pencil. She also found a small notebook. She had an idea. She wanted to try something new. She decided to learn how to draw. She opened the notebook to a clean page. Linh looked at a cup of coffee on the small table next to her.

She wanted to draw the cup. She picked up the pencil and started to draw a line. The first line was not very good. It was too long and not straight. She tried again on the same page. The second line was a little better. She drew a circle for the top of the cup. It did not look like a circle. It looked like an egg. She laughed quietly. A man in the next chair looked at her. "Is that a cup?" he asked. "I am trying to draw one," Linh said. "It is my first time." The man smiled. "Keep going," he said. "It gets easier with practice." Linh felt happy and continued drawing.

Linh spent the next hour drawing different things. She drew a chair. She drew a suitcase. She drew a window. Each drawing was a little better than the one before. She was not perfect, but she was learning. She turned the pages and saw all her pictures. She felt proud of herself. She took a photo of her best drawing with her phone. She wanted to remember this day. Then she heard an announcement. Her flight was ready. She closed her notebook and put it in her bag. She stood up and walked to the gate. She smiled because she learned something new today. She planned to practice drawing again on the plane.

A Sketch in the Departure Lounge

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Linh was sitting in the airport departure lounge, staring at the flight information screen with growing frustration. Her flight had been delayed for at least three hours, and she had already finished the only book she had brought with her. The lounge was crowded with restless travelers, some pacing back and forth while others dozed uncomfortably in their seats. Feeling the weight of boredom pressing down on her, Linh rummaged through her carry-on bag, hoping to find something to pass the time. At the very bottom, beneath a crumpled scarf and a water bottle, she discovered a pencil and a blank sketchbook that she had bought weeks ago but never opened. She had always admired people who could draw, though she had never attempted it herself. Staring at the crisp white pages, she made a decision: she would teach herself to sketch, right here and right now.

She chose her first subject carefully, settling on a forgotten paper coffee cup that someone had left on the seat beside her. Gripping the pencil tightly, she drew her first line, but it wobbled across the page like a nervous heartbeat. She erased it, took a deep breath, and tried once more with a steadier hand. After several attempts, the outline of the cup began to take shape, though it still looked slightly lopsided. A woman sitting across from her had been watching with quiet curiosity. "I hope you don't mind me saying, but try holding the pencil a little further back," the woman suggested gently. "It gives you more control and makes the lines smoother." Linh adjusted her grip, and to her surprise, the next few strokes came out far more naturally than anything she had drawn before.

Over the following two hours, Linh filled page after page with rough but improving sketches of everything around her: rows of plastic chairs, a child's abandoned toy, the broad glass windows overlooking the runway. Each attempt taught her something new about shapes, shadows, and the way light fell on ordinary objects. By the time her flight was finally announced, she had produced over a dozen drawings, and although none of them would belong in a gallery, they represented something meaningful to her. She carefully closed the sketchbook and slipped it back into her bag, already looking forward to practicing on the plane. As she joined the queue at the boarding gate, she realized that the long, frustrating delay had given her an unexpected gift. She had discovered a new passion simply because she had been willing to try something unfamiliar.
