Layla's Phone Keeps Ringing at the School Desk

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Layla works at the reception desk of a school. She sits at a big desk near the front door. Every morning, she checks the schedule and answers questions from parents and students. She likes her job because she likes helping people. The school is busy in the mornings. Many people come to the desk. Some people ask about classes. Some people ask about their children. Layla always tries to be calm and polite. She has a cell phone for work calls. She also has the school phone on her desk. Today is a very busy day. There is a big meeting in the school. Many parents are coming. Layla wants everything to go well. She takes a deep breath and smiles. At nine o'clock, a parent named Mr. Park comes to the desk.

He wants to talk to the principal. Layla says, "Please wait one moment. I will check if she is free." Layla picks up the school phone. But before she can dial, her cell phone starts to ring. She looks at the screen. It is her sister calling. Layla thinks, "This is not a good time." She does not answer the call. She puts the cell phone down. Then her cell phone rings again. Mr. Park looks at the phone. He looks at Layla. Layla feels embarrassed. She says, "I am so sorry." She picks up the cell phone and ends the call. Then her cell phone rings a third time. Layla's face turns red. Mr. Park starts to laugh.

"Your sister really wants to talk to you!" he says. Layla laughs too. She quickly puts the phone on silent. After Mr. Park goes to the principal's office, Layla calls her sister back. Her sister says, "I just wanted to ask what you want for lunch!" Layla laughs and shakes her head. She says, "Please don't call me at work. Send me a message next time." Her sister says, "OK, sorry! I didn't know you were busy." Layla feels better after the call. She puts her cell phone in her bag. She does not want it to ring again during work. The rest of the morning is quiet. No more surprise phone calls. At lunchtime, Layla's sister brings her a sandwich. Layla smiles and says, "Thank you. But next time, just text me!" Her sister laughs. They eat lunch together outside the school. It is a funny story that Layla tells her colleagues for many days after.

Layla's Cell Phone Crisis at the School Reception

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Layla has worked at the reception desk of a busy school for two years, and she takes pride in keeping things running smoothly. Her mornings are usually a careful balance of checking the schedule, greeting visitors, and directing parents to the right offices. Today, however, is more demanding than usual because a large meeting has been organized for parents and staff, and the front desk is at the center of all the activity. Layla has already handled three inquiries before nine o'clock, and she is feeling confident about the day. She keeps her cell phone on the desk, as management requires her to stay reachable during school hours. What she does not realize is that this small detail is about to cause her a great deal of embarrassment. Just as a parent, Mr.

Park, arrives at the desk and explains that he needs to speak with the principal, Layla's cell phone starts to ring. She glances at the screen, sees that it is her sister calling, and decides to ignore it, assuming her sister will understand. She picks up the school phone to check whether the principal is available, but her cell phone rings again almost immediately. Mr. Park raises an eyebrow, and Layla feels her face go red. She apologizes and ends the call, but a third ring follows within seconds. At that point, Mr.

Park lets out a quiet laugh and says, "It sounds like someone really needs to reach you." Layla quickly puts the phone on silent, takes a breath, and does her best to refocus on helping him. Once Mr. Park has been directed to the principal's office, Layla steps away from the desk briefly to call her sister back. The reason for all three calls turns out to be both simple and absurd: her sister wanted to know what kind of sandwich Layla would like for lunch. Layla laughs despite herself, but she speaks firmly and asks her sister to send a text message during work hours in the future rather than calling repeatedly. For the rest of the morning, Layla keeps her cell phone tucked in her bag, determined not to let it disrupt the desk again. When her sister arrives at lunchtime with the sandwich, both of them find the whole situation genuinely funny, and the story becomes a running joke among Layla's colleagues for the rest of the week.
