    Layla and the Slow Printer

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Layla works at the reception desk at a school. Every day, she helps students and teachers. She answers the phone, gives out forms, and sends important papers. One morning, a teacher walks up to the desk. "Layla, can you print ten forms for me, please?" the teacher says. "Of course!" Layla replies with a smile. She opens the document on her computer. She clicks the print button. She hears a small sound from the printer. Then nothing happens. The printer is very quiet. Layla looks at the printer. The little light on the printer is orange. "That is not good," she thinks. She clicks the print button again. Still nothing happens. She waits and watches the printer. After two minutes, the printer makes a loud noise. It sounds like an old car.

Then it stops again. Layla stands up and walks to the printer. She looks at the screen on the printer. It says "Please wait." She goes back to her desk. She clicks the print button one more time. The teacher is still standing at the desk. "Is everything okay?" the teacher asks. "Yes, the printer is just a little slow today," Layla says. She smiles, but she feels a little worried. More people come to the reception desk. A student needs a letter. Another student has a question about a class. Layla helps them all. But she also watches the printer. The printer makes another noise. Then it stops again. "Come on, printer!" Layla thinks quietly. Ten minutes later, the printer finally starts to print. It is very slow.

It prints one page, then it stops. Then it prints another page, then it stops again. Layla counts the pages. "One, two, three..." she says quietly. The teacher waits near the desk. Other people wait too. Finally, the printer prints the last page. Layla picks up all ten forms. She checks them carefully. They all look good. She puts them in a neat pile and gives them to the teacher. "Thank you so much, Layla!" the teacher says happily. "You are welcome!" Layla replies. She sits back down at her desk. She looks at the printer. "Please be faster tomorrow," she says to it quietly. The printer does not answer. But the little light on it turns green.

    Layla's Battle with the Printer

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Layla had been working at the school reception desk for nearly three years, and she had dealt with many frustrating situations. However, nothing tested her patience quite like the ancient printer sitting on the shelf behind her. One busy morning, a teacher approached the desk with an urgent request. "Layla, I need ten copies of this registration form printed before my first class," the teacher said, glancing at the clock. "No problem, leave it with me," Layla replied confidently, opening the file on her computer and sending it to print. She heard the printer stir briefly, as though it were considering the request, before falling completely silent. The orange warning light blinked twice and then stopped, leaving Layla staring at it with a familiar sense of dread. Layla walked over and studied the small screen on the printer, which displayed the deeply unhelpful message: "Processing.

Please wait." She returned to her desk, tried sending the document again, and forced a reassuring smile as the teacher continued to hover nearby. "It's warming up," Layla said calmly, although she suspected the machine was doing the opposite of warming up. Meanwhile, a student arrived needing a signed absence letter, and another had a question about a timetable change, so Layla found herself juggling three tasks at once. Every minute or so, she glanced over her shoulder at the printer, which had begun making a grinding sound similar to a coffee machine with a serious problem. Just as she had started to wonder whether she should restart the machine entirely, it shuddered once and began to print. The printer produced each page with the kind of theatrical slowness that suggested it was deeply dissatisfied with its job. It would print one sheet, pause dramatically, print another, and pause again, as if demanding appreciation between each effort. Layla counted the pages under her breath, resisting the urge to tap her fingers on the desk.

When the tenth and final page slid out, she gathered the forms, checked each one for smudges or missing sections, and handed the neat stack to the teacher with a professional smile. "Thank you for your patience, Layla," the teacher said warmly. "Not at all, happy to help," she replied, settling back into her chair. She turned to the printer and spoke to it quietly. "Same time tomorrow, I suppose," she said. The printer, naturally, said nothing, though its light did turn a calm and steady green.
