    Lars Takes a Step Forward

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Lars works at a soup kitchen every week. He helps wash the dishes and clean the tables. He never talks to the people who come in for food. Lars is afraid of talking to strangers. He does not know what to say. He feels nervous when people look at him. His friend Mia works at the soup kitchen too. Mia always smiles at the guests and talks to them. She brings them soup and bread. She always looks happy. Lars watches Mia every day. He wants to be like her, but he is scared. One day, an old man sits alone at a table near Lars. The man looks sad and tired. Lars feels sorry for the man. Lars looks at the old man for a long time. He takes a deep breath.

His hands shake a little. He picks up a bowl of soup and walks slowly to the man's table. He puts the bowl down carefully. The old man looks up at Lars. Lars opens his mouth, but no words come out. He tries again. "Hello," he says quietly. "My name is Lars. Can I sit with you?" The old man smiles a big smile. "Of course," the man says. "I am happy to have company." Lars sits down next to the man. His heart beats fast, but he feels okay. They talk for a few minutes. The man's name is Otto. Otto tells Lars about his life. Lars listens carefully and asks small questions. It is easier than Lars thought.

After that day, Lars feels different. He is still a little nervous, but he is not so afraid now. He starts to say hello to more guests at the soup kitchen. Some guests smile back. Some guests say thank you. A few guests tell him their names. Every week, Lars talks to more and more people. Mia sees the change in Lars. "You are doing so well," she tells him. "I am really proud of you." Lars smiles and feels warm inside. He thinks about Otto and that first bowl of soup. He knows that the first step was the hardest. Now, Lars looks forward to going to the soup kitchen. He loves to help people and talk to them. He is glad he was brave enough to try.

    The Hardest Step

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Lars has volunteered at the soup kitchen for almost three months, but he has never once spoken to a guest. His role has always been safely behind the scenes: washing pots, restocking shelves, and wiping down counters. The thought of approaching a stranger and starting a conversation fills him with a quiet, persistent dread. His colleague Mia, however, moves through the dining hall with ease, stopping at every table to chat with the guests as though she has known them for years. Lars admires her warmly but cannot imagine doing the same. One evening, while he is stacking clean bowls near the serving counter, he notices an elderly man sitting completely alone at a corner table, staring into his soup without eating. Something about the man's stillness makes Lars pause and set the bowls down. For a long moment, Lars stands frozen, arguing with himself.

He knows that walking over is the right thing to do, yet his legs refuse to move. He takes a slow, steady breath, picks up a small basket of bread rolls, and forces himself across the room. "Excuse me," he says, his voice coming out quieter than he intended, "I thought you might like some bread." The old man looks up, and a tired smile spreads across his face. "That is very kind of you," he replies. "Please, sit down if you have a moment." Lars sits carefully on the edge of the chair. His pulse is racing, but he keeps his voice calm and asks the man how his evening is going. The man's name is Otto, and once he begins to talk, the words flow easily between them. When Lars finally returns to the kitchen, Mia gives him a knowing look.

"I saw what you did out there," she says warmly. "That took real courage." Lars shrugs, though he cannot hide his smile. He realizes that the fear he had built up in his mind was far greater than the reality of simply sitting with another person. In the weeks that follow, he makes a point of speaking to at least one new guest every shift, and gradually the anxiety that once gripped him begins to loosen its hold. He still feels a flutter of nerves at the start of each evening, but he has learned to treat that feeling as a signal to step forward rather than pull back. The soup kitchen has not only given Lars a place to help others — it has given him a way to help himself.
