He cannot find the answer. He does not want to ask. He feels a little embarrassed. He laughs quietly and looks at the floor. After a moment, Jabari decides to be honest. He takes a small breath and looks at Leo.

He says, "Sorry, I don't understand the joke. Can you explain it to me?" Leo looks surprised. Then Leo smiles kindly. He explains the joke slowly and clearly. Jabari listens with care. Suddenly, Jabari understands. He laughs for real this time. It is a big, warm laugh. Fatima claps her hands. Riku pats Jabari on the back. Everyone feels happy. Jabari feels happy too. The Joke That Passed Jabari By

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Jabari arrives at the sports club reception on a quiet Tuesday morning, his gym bag slung over one shoulder. Behind the desk, a receptionist named Fatima is in the middle of a lively conversation with two regular members, Leo and Riku. Jabari does not know them particularly well, though he recognizes their faces from previous visits. Suddenly, Leo delivers a punchline and the whole group bursts into laughter. Jabari catches the sound of it but misses the words entirely, so he responds with a cautious smile, hoping to blend in without drawing attention to himself. He places his bag on the counter and watches the others, searching their expressions for any clue about what was so funny. A faint sense of unease settles over him as the laughter continues.

Hoping to catch up, Jabari listens intently as Leo repeats the joke for Riku's benefit, but even with his full attention, the humor completely escapes him. He scans Leo's face, then Riku's, and finally Fatima's, finding nothing but genuine amusement in each of them. Unwilling to admit his confusion, he nods along and produces a small, polite laugh, tilting his head as though the punchline has just landed for him too. Inside, however, he feels utterly bewildered, turning the words over in his mind without finding the connection that makes them funny. The experience is oddly isolating, like watching a conversation through a closed window. He begins to wonder whether the problem is his understanding of the language, or simply that the humor is rooted in something he has never encountered before. After a brief pause, Jabari decides that pretending to understand is doing him no favors, so he straightens up and speaks openly.

"I'm sorry," he says with a good-natured grin, "but I have to be honest. I completely missed the joke. Would you mind explaining it?" Leo blinks in surprise, then breaks into a warm smile and walks Jabari through the set-up and the punchline step by step. As the logic of it finally clicks into place, Jabari lets out a genuine burst of laughter that makes Fatima clap her hands in delight. Riku gives him a friendly pat on the back and says, "Honestly, it's even funnier when you explain it." Jabari collects his bag, still smiling, and heads towards the changing room feeling far more at ease than when he had first walked through the door.
