    Hassan's Big Day

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Hassan sat in a small waiting room. He was at the driving test center. There were many chairs in the room. Some other people sat there too. Hassan looked at the clock on the wall. He felt very nervous. His hands were cold. His heart was beating fast. This was his first driving test. He did not know what to do first. He looked around the room. He saw a sign on the wall. The sign said 'Wait here.' He sat down and put his bag on the floor. A woman sat next to Hassan. Her name was Mia. She smiled at him.

Hassan smiled back at her. 'Is this your first test?' she asked. 'Yes,' said Hassan. 'I am very nervous.' Mia nodded. 'Me too,' she said. 'But I think we can do it.' Hassan felt a little better. He took a deep breath. He looked at his notes. He read them slowly. He tried to remember all the road signs. He saw a picture of a zebra crossing in his notes. He remembered what his teacher told him. 'Always stop for people at a zebra crossing,' his teacher said. A man came into the room. He called Hassan's name. Hassan stood up quickly.

His legs felt weak. He picked up his bag. 'Good luck!' said Mia. Hassan smiled at her. 'Thank you,' he said. He walked to the door. The man opened the door for him. Hassan took another deep breath. He told himself, 'I can do this.' He walked outside to the car. The sun was shining. The birds were singing. Hassan got into the car. He put on his seatbelt. He was ready to learn something new.

    The Waiting Room

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Hassan arrived at the driving test center earlier than he needed to. The waiting room was a plain, quiet space filled with rows of plastic chairs, and most of them were already taken. He chose a seat near the window and placed his folder of study notes carefully on his lap. Although he had prepared for weeks, a familiar feeling of anxiety had followed him through the door. His palms were slightly damp, and he noticed his knee was bouncing without him meaning it to. He glanced at the other candidates around him, wondering if they felt the same mixture of dread and determination that he did. The clock on the wall moved slowly, as if it were mocking him.

A woman sitting beside Hassan introduced herself as Mia, and her calm manner helped ease the tension he was feeling. 'First time?' she asked, nodding towards his notes. 'Is it that obvious?' Hassan replied with a nervous laugh. Mia smiled and told him that she had failed her first attempt two months ago, but that the experience had actually taught her more than any lesson had. Hassan found this surprisingly reassuring. He flipped open his notes and reviewed a few key road signs, reminding himself that knowledge and confidence were things he had genuinely worked to build. By the time a staff member appeared at the door, Hassan had managed to replace most of his anxiety with quiet focus.

When his name was finally called, Hassan stood up with a steadiness that surprised even himself. 'You've got this,' Mia said, giving him an encouraging nod. He thanked her, took one slow breath, and walked towards the examiner waiting by the door. As he stepped outside into the fresh air, he realized that the waiting had actually been the hardest part. Getting into the car and adjusting the mirrors felt surprisingly natural, like something he had always known how to do. He reminded himself that every skilled driver had once sat exactly where he had been sitting, feeling exactly what he had been feeling. Whatever the result, Hassan had already learned something important: showing up and trying was the first step to mastering anything new.
