    Hana's Loud Phone

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Hana is sitting in a clinic waiting room. She is waiting to see the doctor. The room is very quiet. There are many other people sitting in the room too. Some people are reading old magazines. Some people are just looking at the floor. A nurse is sitting at a desk near the door. Hana is a little nervous about her appointment. She does not like going to the doctor. She sits down in a chair near the window. She puts her bag on the floor next to her feet. She takes out her phone and looks at the time. The appointment is in twenty minutes. She puts her phone in her coat pocket. She closes her eyes and tries to relax. Everything is very calm and peaceful. Suddenly, Hana's phone starts to ring.

The sound is very loud. Everybody in the waiting room looks at her. Hana's face goes red. She feels very embarrassed. She quickly puts her hand in her coat pocket. But she cannot find the phone. She tries her other pocket. It is not there either. She opens her bag and looks inside. She can hear the phone ringing but she cannot find it. The nurse at the desk looks up at her. A small child in the corner starts to laugh. An old man next to Hana shakes his head slowly. Finally, Hana finds the phone at the bottom of her bag. She looks at the screen. The call is from her friend Mia. She presses the button to stop the ringing.

The room is quiet again. Hana feels very sorry. She looks around the room at all the people. "I am so sorry," she says in a quiet voice. "That was very rude of me." The nurse smiles at her kindly. "It is okay," the nurse says. "It happens all the time." Hana puts her phone on silent. She checks that the sound is completely off. Then she puts the phone back in her bag. A few minutes later, the nurse calls her name. "Hana? The doctor is ready for you now." Hana stands up and picks up her bag. She walks to the door and smiles at the nurse. "Thank you," she says. She is happy that the appointment is finally here. She is also very happy that her phone is now silent. She promises herself to always put her phone on silent before she goes inside a building.

    The Worst Possible Moment

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Hana arrived at the clinic early and found a seat in the corner of the waiting room, hoping to spend a few quiet minutes collecting her thoughts before her appointment. The room was almost entirely silent, filled only with the soft rustle of magazine pages and the occasional muffled cough from across the room. A middle-aged man was staring at the ceiling, and a woman with a young child was whispering gently to keep him calm. Hana reached into her coat pocket, checked her phone for the time, and slipped it back without a second thought. She had been meaning to switch it to silent mode all morning but had completely forgotten in her rush to get out of the house. As she settled back into her chair and closed her eyes, the peaceful atmosphere of the waiting room wrapped around her like a blanket.

Without any warning, her phone erupted into a full-volume ringtone that shattered the calm of the room in an instant. Every head turned in her direction, and Hana felt the blood rush to her face as she frantically searched her pockets. The phone, however, seemed to have buried itself deep inside her bag, hidden beneath her wallet, a folded piece of paper, and a small umbrella. The louder it rang, the more flustered she became, fumbling through the contents of her bag while the ringtone echoed off the clinic walls. The nurse at the reception desk looked up with a politely raised eyebrow, and the little boy in the corner let out a giggle that he quickly tried to smother. After what felt like an eternity, Hana's fingers closed around the phone, and she jabbed at the screen to silence it.

The caller ID showed her friend Mia's name, and Hana let out a long, shaky breath. Hana looked around the room, her face still warm with embarrassment, and offered a quiet but sincere apology to everyone within earshot. "I'm really sorry about that," she murmured, immediately switching the phone to silent and dropping it firmly back into her bag. The nurse gave her a reassuring smile and said, "Don't worry about it, it happens more often than you'd think." Relieved but still flustered, Hana straightened in her chair and stared at the floor, willing the next few minutes to pass quickly. When the nurse finally called her name, Hana stood up with a grateful sigh and gathered her things. As she walked through the door to the doctor's office, she made a firm mental note to always check her phone settings the moment she entered any public building, no matter how rushed she was feeling.
