Hana's Grocery List in the Waiting Room

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Hana sits in the waiting room at the clinic. The room is quiet and a little cold. There are six chairs along the wall. Hana is the only person sitting there right now. She has an appointment with the doctor in thirty minutes. She does not want to waste time. She takes her phone out of her bag. She opens a notes app and starts to think. She needs to go to the supermarket after her appointment. She did not go shopping last week. The refrigerator at home is almost empty. She only has some eggs and a little milk. She wants to make a shopping list so she does not forget anything. She feels happy to have something useful to do while she waits. Hana starts to write her list. She needs bread, rice, chicken, and some vegetables. She also wants to buy apples and bananas.

She types each item carefully on her phone. Then she thinks about drinks. She needs orange juice and water. She also needs coffee because she finished the last of it this morning. She looks at her list and smiles. It is a good list. Then a nurse opens a door and looks at her. "Hana?" the nurse says. "The doctor will see you in a few minutes." "Thank you," Hana says. She puts her phone in her bag. She stands up and walks to a chair closer to the door. She looks at a magazine on the small table next to her. She does not read it. She is still thinking about her shopping. A few minutes later, Hana walks into the doctor's room. The appointment is short. The doctor says she is fine.

Hana feels relieved. She leaves the clinic and walks to the supermarket. It is just two blocks away. She takes her phone out and opens her list. She gets a cart at the entrance. She walks to the bread section first. She puts a loaf of bread in the cart. Then she gets rice, chicken, and vegetables. She finds the apples and bananas in the fruit section. She gets the orange juice, water, and coffee too. At the checkout, the sales clerk smiles at her. "Did you find everything okay?" the sales clerk asks. "Yes, thank you!" Hana says. She pays and puts the bags in her cart. She walks home feeling happy. Her list was perfect. She did not forget a single thing.

Hana Plans Her Grocery Run from the Clinic Waiting Room

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Hana arrived at the clinic ten minutes early for her appointment and found the waiting room almost deserted. A few worn magazines were fanned out on a low table, and a water dispenser hummed softly in the corner, but she had no interest in either. Knowing she had at least half an hour to spare, she pulled out her phone and opened her notes app, determined to use the time productively. Her refrigerator had been looking embarrassingly bare all week, and she had been putting off a trip to the supermarket for far too long. She began typing out a shopping list, pausing every now and then to think carefully about what she actually needed rather than just what she fancied. By the time the list reached fifteen items, she felt a quiet sense of satisfaction, as though she had already accomplished something. She was reviewing her list for the second time when a nurse appeared in the doorway and called her name. "Hana?

The doctor will be with you shortly," the nurse said with a calm smile. Hana tucked her phone into her bag and followed the nurse down a short corridor. The appointment itself was brief and reassuring. The doctor confirmed that everything was fine and reminded her to stay well hydrated, especially in warm weather. Hana thanked her, collected her bag, and stepped back out into the bright afternoon feeling lighter than she had in days. The supermarket was only two blocks from the clinic, so she decided to walk there directly rather than going home first. She grabbed a cart at the entrance and pulled up her list, moving efficiently through the aisles and checking off each item as she went. The store was busier than she had expected for that time of day, but she navigated the crowds without much difficulty.

When she reached the checkout, a friendly sales clerk began scanning her items. "Did you find everything okay?" he asked. "I did, actually, and faster than usual," Hana replied, laughing a little. She paid, loaded her bags into the cart, and headed for the exit. Walking home with her groceries, she felt genuinely pleased with herself. Planning her list in the waiting room had turned what could have been wasted time into something unexpectedly useful.
