    Freya Explains the Machine

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Freya sat in the waiting area at the job center. There were many chairs in the room. Some chairs were blue and some were gray. Freya had a number. The number was on a small piece of paper. She looked at the screen on the wall. The screen showed numbers. People waited for their number to appear. An old man sat next to Freya. He looked confused. He was holding a piece of paper. He did not know what to do. He looked at a big machine near the door. "Excuse me," he said. "What is that machine for?" Freya smiled at him. "I can help you," she said. Freya stood up and walked to the machine. The old man followed her slowly.

"This machine gives you a number," Freya said. "You press this button here." She pointed to a green button. The machine made a small noise. A ticket came out of the machine. "Take the ticket," Freya said. The man took the ticket carefully. "Now you wait," Freya said. "When your number appears on the screen, you go to the desk." The man looked at the screen. He looked at his ticket. He smiled. "That is easy!" he said. "Yes," said Freya. "It is not difficult." The man sat down again. He felt happy now. He understood the machine. A young woman came into the waiting area. She also looked confused. She did not have a ticket.

She looked at Freya. "Sorry," the woman said. "How does this work?" Freya walked to the machine again. "First, you press the green button," Freya said. "Then a ticket comes out. You take the ticket and sit down. Then you watch the screen. When your number comes up, you go to the desk and speak to someone." The woman nodded her head. "Thank you so much," she said. "You are welcome," said Freya. Freya went back to her chair. She looked at her ticket. Her number was not on the screen yet. She waited. She felt good because she helped two people. She smiled and looked around the room.

    Freya and the Waiting Game

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

The waiting area at the job center was busier than Freya had expected. Rows of gray chairs were arranged neatly along the walls, and a large display screen flickered at the front of the room, cycling through numbers in bold red digits. Freya checked her ticket and settled into a seat near the window. An elderly gentleman beside her was turning his ticket over in his hands, his brow furrowed as he glanced repeatedly between the ticket and the screen. After a moment's hesitation, he leaned towards Freya and said, "Forgive me, but I'm struggling to understand how this system operates." Freya recognized the look of someone encountering the process for the first time, and she was glad to explain. "It's quite straightforward once you know how it works," Freya said, keeping her voice low out of consideration for the others waiting nearby.

She explained that the machine by the entrance issued numbered tickets in sequence, and that the display screen called each number when a member of staff became available at one of the desks. "So you simply wait until your number appears on the screen, and then you go to whichever desk is shown," she said. The man listened carefully, nodding as the process became clearer to him. "I must have walked past that machine without noticing it," he admitted. "A lot of people do," Freya replied with a reassuring smile. Before long, a young woman who had just entered the waiting area approached Freya with the same question.

"Could you explain how the ticketing system works?" she asked, looking slightly flustered. Freya walked her over to the machine and talked her through each step: pressing the button, collecting the ticket, finding a seat, and monitoring the screen. "The key thing to remember," Freya added, "is to keep an eye on the screen, because the numbers move on quite quickly." The woman thanked her warmly and took a seat. Freya returned to her own chair, feeling a quiet sense of satisfaction. Helping others understand an unfamiliar process, she thought, was one of the more rewarding ways to pass the time.
