    A Fortunate Turn of Events

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Fatima had been looking forward to her visit to the library all week. She had a clear purpose in mind: she wanted to borrow a well-known book on astronomy that a colleague had recommended to her. When she arrived that morning, however, a hand-written sign on the science section door stopped her immediately. The sign read, "This section is temporarily closed for maintenance. We apologize for the inconvenience." Fatima sighed quietly and stood in the middle of the aisle, unsure of what to do next. She had planned her whole morning around finding that one book. A nearby librarian noticed her expression and walked over. "Is there anything I can help you with?" she asked with a warm smile.

Fatima explained her situation, and the librarian listened carefully before responding. "I'm sorry about that. The shelves in that section need urgent repairs, and we weren't able to give much notice," she said. "However, we've just set up a new reading display near the entrance with books from a range of subjects. You might find something unexpected that interests you." Fatima thanked her and made her way to the display, not expecting much. To her surprise, a slim volume on the history of cartography caught her eye. She had never considered the subject before, but the cover image of an ancient hand-drawn map drew her in immediately. She opened it and read the first few pages standing right there at the table.

Fatima carried the book to a quiet seat by the window and lost herself in it for nearly two hours. She had not planned to stay so long, but the stories behind the world's oldest maps were far more captivating than she had anticipated. As she was getting ready to leave, she noticed a small poster on the wall advertising a monthly talk series held at the library. The next talk was titled "Maps, Journeys, and the Unknown World." Fatima took out her phone and photographed the poster so she would not forget the details. "I almost didn't come in today," she thought to herself as she pushed open the library door. What had started as a frustrating interruption to her plans had quietly turned into something much more exciting.
