Emil Is Sorry He Is Late

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Emil lives in a big apartment building. There is one kitchen that everyone in the building shares. Emil likes to cook his dinner there every evening. Today, he wants to make a simple soup. He goes to the kitchen at six o'clock. He sees his neighbor, Petra, waiting outside the kitchen door. Petra looks unhappy. She has a pot in her hand. She wants to cook her dinner too. Emil looks at her and feels bad. He knows she has been waiting for a long time. He says, "I am so sorry, Petra. I did not know you were waiting." Petra nods her head slowly. Emil opens the door and they both go inside. The kitchen is small but clean. There are two cookers in the kitchen. Emil walks to one cooker and Petra walks to the other. Emil puts his pot on the cooker.

He turns on the heat. He starts to cut some vegetables on the table. Petra puts her pan on her cooker. She does not speak at first. Emil looks at her again. He wants to explain why he is late. "I went to the shop after work," he says. "There was a very long queue." Petra looks at him. "How long did you wait?" she asks. "Almost forty minutes," says Emil. "The shop was very busy today." Petra's face becomes softer. She nods again. "That is a long time," she says. "Yes, it was," says Emil. He stirs his soup slowly. He adds some salt and pepper to it. The kitchen starts to smell nice. Petra smiles a little.

"It happens," she says kindly. Emil feels relieved. He was worried that Petra was very angry with him. "Thank you for being patient," he says to her. Petra laughs softly. "Next time, send me a message," she says. "Then I will know you are coming late." Emil thinks this is a very good idea. "Yes, I will do that," he says. "Good," says Petra. She stirs her food in the pan. Emil stirs his soup too. They cook quietly together. The kitchen feels warm and friendly now. Emil is happy that Petra is not angry. He tells himself to always send a message next time. They finish cooking at the same time. They say goodnight to each other and go back to their rooms.

    Better Late Than Never

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Emil had been looking forward to a quiet evening in the shared kitchen, but the moment he stepped through the door, he noticed Petra standing by the counter with her arms folded and her pan already in her hand. She had clearly been waiting for some time, and her expression made that perfectly obvious. "I was starting to think you had forgotten entirely," she said, setting her pan down on the nearest cooker with a little more force than was necessary. Emil raised both hands in a gesture of apology and moved quickly to the second cooker, hoping to ease the tension before it had a chance to grow. The kitchen was compact but well-equipped, with two cookers side by side and a long wooden counter that they usually shared without any difficulty. This evening, however, the atmosphere felt noticeably different from their usual comfortable routine.

"I owe you an explanation," Emil said, turning the heat on low and reaching for the vegetables he had brought in a bag. "I stopped at the shop on the way home, which I do every Thursday, but the queue this evening was absolutely unreasonable." He went on to describe how the line had stretched almost to the entrance, and how he had considered leaving twice before finally deciding to stay. Petra listened without interrupting, her expression gradually softening as he spoke. "I should have sent you a message the moment I realized I was going to be late," he admitted, adding a pinch of salt to the water beginning to bubble in his pot. "That would have been the sensible thing to do." Petra tilted her head slightly, acknowledging his honesty rather than dismissing it. "Well, you are here now," Petra said, with a tone that suggested she had already decided to let the matter go.

Emil exhaled slowly, relieved that what could have become an awkward and prolonged disagreement was instead dissolving into something far more manageable. They cooked in companionable silence for a while, the smell of their respective meals gradually filling the small space with something warm and pleasant. "I genuinely appreciate your patience," Emil said after a few minutes, glancing over at her pan. Petra gave a small shrug. "Just send me a message next time, and we can avoid all of this," she replied, smiling faintly. Emil nodded and made a mental note to do exactly that, understanding that a small act of communication could so easily prevent a great deal of unnecessary frustration for both of them.
