    Elena Takes the Wheel

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Elena has worked at a small shop for three years, selling fresh produce and groceries to her neighbors. She has always walked to work, but lately she has been thinking about learning to drive. A car would give her more independence and make her daily routine much easier. Her friend Marco recently passed his driving test, and when she mentioned her goal, he immediately offered to help. "I'll teach you everything I know," he said confidently. Elena felt a rush of excitement mixed with nerves. She had never sat behind the wheel before, and the idea of controlling a car felt both thrilling and overwhelming.

They arranged to meet on Saturday morning in the parking lot beside the shop, which would be quiet and empty at that hour. When Marco arrived, Elena was already waiting outside, shifting her weight from foot to foot. He walked her through the basics without rushing, explaining the function of the steering wheel, the gas pedal, and the brake in simple, clear terms. "The most important thing," he told her, "is to stay calm and focus on one thing at a time." Elena listened carefully, repeating each step under her breath. When she finally gripped the steering wheel, her hands were trembling slightly, but she took a slow, steady breath and reminded herself that every driver had started exactly where she was standing. Elena drove slowly around the parking lot, and with each loop her confidence grew a little more. Marco guided her calmly, telling her when to brake, when to accelerate, and when to steer around the painted lines on the ground.

At one point, a sales clerk from the shop stepped outside on her break and spotted them. She laughed and called out, "Looking good, Elena!" Elena grinned and momentarily lost her concentration, but quickly recovered. After an hour, she switched off the engine and sat back with a long sigh of relief. "That was harder than I expected," she admitted, "but I actually enjoyed it." Marco nodded and said, "You're a natural. You'll be driving to work before you know it."
