Diego Talks to His Landlord at the Launderette

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Diego lives in a small apartment on the third floor of a building. One morning, he puts his clothes in a bag and walks to the launderette on his street. The launderette is close to his building. Diego likes to do his laundry there every week. He puts his clothes in a washing machine and adds some soap. He closes the door and presses the button. The machine starts. Diego sits down and waits. There are a few other people in the launderette. Some of them read. Some of them look at their cell phones. Diego looks around the room. Then he sees someone he knows. It is his landlord, Mr. Hasan. Mr. Hasan is also doing his laundry. Diego feels a little nervous. He wants to talk to Mr. Hasan about a problem in his apartment. Diego walks over to Mr.

Hasan and says, "Hello, Mr. Hasan. Do you have a minute?" Mr. Hasan smiles and says, "Of course, Diego. What is it?" Diego takes a breath and speaks. "There is a problem in my bathroom," he says. "The faucet is broken. Water drips from it all day and all night." Mr. Hasan listens carefully. "How long has this been happening?" he asks. Diego says, "It started about a week ago. I tried to fix it myself, but I could not." Mr. Hasan nods. "I understand," he says. "A dripping faucet can waste a lot of water." Diego also tells him about another problem. "The light in the hallway outside my apartment is not working," he says. "It is very dark at night." Mr. Hasan looks serious. "That is not safe," he says. "I will take care of both problems." Diego feels relieved. He thanks Mr.

Hasan for listening. Mr. Hasan takes out his cell phone and makes a note of Diego's apartment number. "I will call a plumber today," he says. "The plumber will come to fix the faucet tomorrow morning. Is that okay?" Diego nods and says, "Yes, that is fine. I will be home in the morning." Mr. Hasan also says, "I will replace the light bulb in the hallway today. It will be done before the evening." Diego smiles and says, "Thank you so much, Mr. Hasan. I really appreciate it." Mr. Hasan pats Diego on the shoulder. "It is my job to keep the building in good condition," he says. "Please always tell me when something is broken." Diego goes back to his seat. He feels much better now. His washing machine finishes, and he moves his clothes to the dryer. He thinks it was a good idea to speak to Mr. Hasan today. Sometimes, the best time to solve a problem is when you least expect it.

Diego's Repair Request Between the Wash Cycles

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Diego had been meaning to contact his landlord, Mr. Hasan, for several days, but he kept putting it off. He was not sure how Mr. Hasan would react, and he did not want to seem like a difficult tenant. That Saturday morning, Diego packed his laundry into a bag and headed to the launderette around the corner from his apartment building. After loading his clothes into a washing machine and setting the cycle, he settled into a plastic chair and scrolled through his cell phone. A few minutes later, he glanced up and spotted Mr. Hasan at a machine across the room, folding a jacket. Diego felt a mixture of relief and nerves. He decided this was his opportunity. Diego crossed the room and greeted his landlord with a polite smile.

"Mr. Hasan, I'm glad I ran into you," he said. "I've been meaning to talk to you about a couple of things in my apartment." Mr. Hasan turned and nodded attentively. "Of course, go ahead," he replied. Diego explained that the faucet in his bathroom had been leaking steadily for nearly a week, wasting water and keeping him awake at night with its constant dripping. He added that the light fixture in the hallway outside his apartment had also stopped working, leaving the corridor completely dark after sunset. "I tried adjusting the faucet myself, but it didn't make any difference," Diego admitted. Mr. Hasan listened carefully without interrupting, then said, "You were right to bring this to me. Both of those issues need to be dealt with properly."

Mr. Hasan pulled out his cell phone and noted down Diego's apartment number and the details of both problems. "I'll arrange for a plumber to come over tomorrow morning, if that works for you," he said. Diego confirmed that he would be home and thanked him. Mr. Hasan also assured Diego that he would replace the faulty hallway light bulb himself that same afternoon, well before dark. "I want all my tenants to feel safe and comfortable," Mr. Hasan said firmly. Diego felt a wave of relief wash over him. He thanked his landlord and returned to his seat, already feeling lighter. As his washing machine hummed quietly in the background, Diego reflected that sometimes the most practical conversations happen in the most unexpected places.
