    Cian Falls Asleep at Lunch

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Cian was a student at a big school. He had many classes every day. He woke up very early that morning. He did not sleep well the night before. He felt very tired at breakfast. He ate a small piece of bread. He drank a glass of water. Then he walked to school with his bag. His first class was math. His second class was science. Both classes were long and difficult. Cian tried hard to listen to his teachers. But his eyes felt very heavy. He yawned many times in class. At lunchtime, Cian went to the school canteen.

The canteen was loud and full of students. Cian got a tray and some food. He chose rice, vegetables, and a bread roll. He sat down at a table near the window. His friend Mia sat next to him. "You look very tired today," said Mia. "I am very tired," said Cian. "I could not sleep last night." He started to eat his lunch slowly. The food was warm and good. The canteen was warm too. The noise around him felt far away. His head began to feel heavy. He put his head down on his arms. Cian fell asleep at the table. His mouth was open a little.

He snored quietly. Some students nearby started to laugh. Mia looked at him and smiled. A dinner lady came to the table. "Is he okay?" she asked Mia. "Yes, he is just very tired," said Mia. The dinner lady nodded and walked away. Cian slept for about ten minutes. Then the bell rang loudly. Cian lifted his head quickly. He looked around the canteen. His face was red. "Did I fall asleep?" he asked. "Yes, you did," said Mia, and she laughed. Cian smiled and picked up his fork to finish his lunch.

The Lunch That Turned Into a Nap

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Cian had been struggling to keep his eyes open all morning. He had spent most of the previous night staring at the ceiling, unable to switch off his busy mind, and by the time his alarm went off he felt as though he had barely slept at all. He dragged himself through two back-to-back lessons, doing his best to concentrate while his eyelids grew heavier with every passing minute. By the time the lunch bell finally rang, he was running on nothing but stubbornness and a half-eaten breakfast. He shuffled down the corridor with the rest of his classmates, quietly hoping that a warm meal might restore some of his energy. The canteen was already buzzing with noise and movement when he arrived, and the familiar smell of cooked food drifted towards him as he joined the queue. Cian chose a seat near the window, away from the busiest part of the canteen, and set his tray down with a sigh of relief.

His friend Mia dropped into the chair beside him, immediately noticing the dark circles under his eyes. "You look like you haven't slept in days," she said, raising an eyebrow. "I feel like I haven't," Cian replied, picking up his fork without much enthusiasm. He managed a few mouthfuls of food before the warmth of the room and the steady hum of surrounding conversation began to wash over him like a slow, comfortable wave. His chin dropped towards his chest once, then twice. Before he had even realized what was happening, his forehead came to rest gently on his folded arms, and his breathing slowed to the quiet, steady rhythm of sleep. It was the sharp ring of the bell that eventually dragged Cian back to consciousness.

He lifted his head with a jolt, blinking hard as the canteen came back into focus around him. Mia was watching him with an expression caught somewhere between amusement and concern. "How long was I out?" he asked, his voice still thick with sleep. "About ten minutes," she said, trying not to smile. "Long enough for half the canteen to notice." Cian felt warmth rise in his cheeks as he glanced around and caught a few grinning faces looking back at him. He straightened up, smoothed down his hair, and reached for his fork with as much dignity as he could manage. "Right," he said quietly, "I really need to start going to bed earlier."
