    Chiara Is Late for Swimming

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Chiara loves swimming. She goes to the swimming pool every Tuesday. Today is Tuesday. She wakes up at seven o'clock. She looks at her phone. She has a message from her friend Marco. Marco says, "Chiara, don't forget swimming today!" Chiara smiles. She gets up and goes to the bathroom. She washes her face and brushes her teeth. Then she goes to the kitchen. She makes some breakfast. She eats some bread and drinks a glass of water. She feels ready. She picks up her swimming bag and puts on her shoes. Chiara walks to the swimming pool. The pool is not far from her home. It takes about fifteen minutes to walk there. But today, something goes wrong.

She sees a cat on the road. The cat is small and white. It looks scared. Chiara stops walking. She tries to help the cat. She picks it up carefully. She looks for a safe place for it. She finds a garden near a small building. She puts the cat down gently. The cat walks into the garden. Chiara feels happy. But then she looks at her watch. She is very late! She runs to the swimming pool. She is out of breath when she arrives. Chiara opens the door of the pool. Her swimming teacher, Mr. Hassan, is standing near the water.

He looks at her. "Chiara, you are twenty minutes late," he says. Chiara feels embarrassed. "I am very sorry," she says. "I found a small cat on the road. It looked scared, so I stopped to help it." Mr. Hassan listens. He does not look angry. He smiles a little. "That is a kind reason," he says. "But please try to be on time next week." Chiara nods. "I will," she says. She changes her clothes quickly. She jumps into the pool. The water feels cold and wonderful. She swims fast and forgets about being late. Chiara's Unexpected Detour

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Chiara had been looking forward to her Tuesday swimming session all week. She woke up early, prepared her bag the night before, and even planned her route to make sure she would arrive with time to spare. Everything seemed perfectly organized until, halfway along the familiar path to the pool, she noticed a small white cat crouching in the middle of the road, trembling and refusing to move. Without hesitating, Chiara crouched down beside it and spoke to it softly, trying to coax it towards the pavement. The cat was clearly frightened, and she knew she could not simply walk past and leave it there. After several minutes of patient effort, Chiara managed to guide the cat safely into a garden beside a low wall, where it finally settled and stopped shaking.

She watched it for a moment to make sure it was calm, then turned and immediately broke into a run. By the time she pushed open the heavy glass door of the swimming pool, she was breathless and her hair was dishevelled from running in the wind. Her swimming teacher, Mr. Hassan, was already standing at the poolside with the rest of the group, watching her hurry in with a mixture of concern and mild irritation. "Chiara, we've been waiting for nearly twenty minutes," Mr. Hassan said, keeping his voice measured but firm.

Chiara caught her breath and quickly explained what had happened, describing the frightened cat and the time it had taken to coax it to safety. Mr. Hassan listened without interrupting, and when she finished, his expression softened noticeably. "I appreciate that you stopped to help," he said, "but in future, please let someone know if you're going to be delayed." Chiara nodded, feeling both relieved and a little ashamed. She changed quickly and slipped into the water, and as she began to swim, the cool resistance of the pool helped her clear her mind and let go of the morning's chaos.
