    Chiara Is Late for Swimming

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Chiara had a swimming lesson every Saturday morning. The lesson started at nine o'clock. She always arrived early and talked to her friends before the lesson. She liked swimming very much. Her coach was a tall woman called Nadia. Nadia was very strict about time. She always said, "Please be on time." Chiara set her alarm clock for seven thirty every Saturday. She usually woke up quickly and got ready. She ate breakfast and packed her swimming bag. She put her swimsuit, towel, and goggles in the bag. Then she walked to the swimming pool. The pool was not far from her house. It took about fifteen minutes to walk there. Chiara was never late. But last Saturday was different. Chiara forgot to set her alarm clock on Friday night.

She was very tired because she studied a lot that day. She slept and slept. She opened her eyes and looked at the clock. It was eight fifty. "Oh no!" she said. She jumped out of bed very fast. She ran to the bathroom and washed her face. She put on her clothes and grabbed her bag. She did not eat breakfast. She did not check her bag. She ran all the way to the swimming pool. Her heart was beating very fast. When she arrived, it was nine fifteen. The lesson already started. She was fifteen minutes late. Chiara walked to the pool slowly.

She felt nervous. Nadia looked at her and stopped the lesson. "Chiara, you are late," Nadia said. "Why are you late today?" Chiara took a deep breath. "I am sorry, Nadia," she said. "I forgot to set my alarm clock last night. I woke up very late this morning." Nadia listened carefully. "I understand," Nadia said. "But please do not let it happen again." Chiara nodded. "I promise it will not happen again," she said. She changed into her swimsuit and got into the pool. Her friends smiled at her. She felt better. After the lesson, she wrote a note on her phone. The note said, "Always set the alarm." She did not want to be late again.

    No Time to Explain

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Chiara had been attending the same swimming class for over a year, and she prided herself on always being punctual. Her coach, Nadia, ran a well-organized session every Saturday morning, and she expected all her swimmers to be poolside and ready by nine o'clock sharp. Chiara enjoyed the routine of waking up early, preparing her kit, and walking to the leisure center with plenty of time to spare. She would usually arrive ten minutes early, stretch by the poolside, and chat with her teammates while they waited for the warm-up to begin. Being reliable was something that mattered to Chiara, and she had never once given Nadia a reason to complain. However, one particular Saturday would test that perfect record in a way she had not expected. It all started the night before, when Chiara stayed up far too late reviewing notes for an important test. By the time Chiara finally fell asleep, it was well past midnight, and she had completely forgotten to set her alarm.

When she eventually opened her eyes the next morning, sunlight was streaming through her window, which immediately told her something was wrong. She reached for her phone and gasped when she saw that it was already eight fifty. Without wasting a single second, she threw on her clothes, stuffed her swimming things into a bag, and rushed out of the door without having breakfast. She sprinted the entire way to the leisure center, arriving breathless and flustered at nine seventeen. As she pushed open the door to the pool area, she could see that the session was already well underway, and every pair of eyes turned towards her. The heavy smell of chlorine hit her nose, and she could hear the echo of splashing bouncing off the tiled walls. Nadia was standing at the far end of the pool with her arms folded, watching Chiara approach. "You are seventeen minutes late, Chiara," Nadia said in a calm but firm voice.

"Would you like to explain?" Chiara caught her breath and replied honestly, "I was up very late studying last night, and I completely forgot to set my alarm. I know it is not a good enough excuse, but I am truly sorry." Nadia considered this for a moment and then nodded slowly. "I appreciate your honesty, and I understand that things do not always go according to plan," she said. "But being part of a team means showing up when you are expected, so please make sure this does not become a habit." Chiara apologized once more, quickly changed into her swimsuit, and slipped into the water to join the others. After the session, she felt grateful that Nadia had been understanding, yet she also felt determined never to let it happen again. On her way home, she set three separate alarms on her phone and whispered to herself, "Never again."
