    Carlos's First Day

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Carlos woke up early on Monday morning. He was excited and nervous. It was his first day at a new job. He worked at a hospital. His job was in the waiting room. He helped patients when they arrived. Carlos put on his uniform. It was blue and white. He looked at himself in the mirror. He took a deep breath. "I can do this," he said quietly. He ate a small breakfast. Then he walked to the hospital. He arrived ten minutes early. The waiting room was very busy. There were many chairs and a long desk.

Carlos stood behind the desk. A woman came to the desk. She looked worried. "Excuse me," she said. "I need to see a doctor." Carlos smiled at her. "Of course," he said. "Please write your name here." He gave her a form. She sat down and filled it in. An old man came next. He walked slowly with a stick. Carlos helped him find a seat. "Thank you," the old man said. "You are very kind." Carlos felt happy. At lunchtime, Carlos sat in a small room. A colleague came in. Her name was Sara.

"How is your first day?" she asked. "It is hard work," said Carlos. "But I like it." Sara laughed. "Yes, it is always busy here," she said. She gave him a cup of tea. They talked for a short time. Then they went back to work. In the afternoon, Carlos helped many more patients. He answered questions. He gave out forms. He showed people where to go. At the end of the day, Carlos was very tired. But he was also very happy. "I love this job," he thought.

    Carlos's New Beginning

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Carlos had barely slept the night before his first day at the hospital. As he pulled on his uniform that Monday morning, he caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror and noticed the tension in his face. He had worked in administration before, but a hospital felt different from anything he had experienced. The waiting room was his responsibility now, and he wanted to manage it well. He arrived ahead of schedule, introduced himself to the receptionist on duty, and spent a few minutes familiarising himself with the desk and the filing system. By the time the doors opened, he felt cautiously prepared. "Here we go," he murmured to himself, straightening his collar.

The morning passed in a blur of anxious faces, registration forms, and polite but persistent questions. A distressed woman approached the desk shortly after opening, explaining that her husband had been waiting for over an hour. Carlos listened carefully, checked the system without rushing her, and reassured her that he would follow up immediately. Further along the queue, an elderly man was struggling to understand the registration process, so Carlos came around from behind the desk and guided him through it step by step. It was demanding work, but Carlos found that the more he focused on each individual person rather than the room as a whole, the more manageable it all became. "You're a natural at this," the senior receptionist remarked during a brief quiet moment. Over lunch, Carlos sat with Sara, a colleague who had been working at the hospital for several years.

She asked how he was finding it, and he admitted that it was more emotionally demanding than he had anticipated, but that he found it genuinely rewarding. Sara nodded and told him that the feeling rarely went away, which she considered a good sign. By the time his shift ended, Carlos had assisted dozens of patients, resolved two minor scheduling conflicts, and learned the names of most of his new colleagues. He walked home feeling the particular kind of tiredness that comes only from doing something that truly matters. He already knew he would return the next day with the same quiet determination.
