    Carlos and the Waiting Room

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Carlos woke up very early in the morning. It was his first day at a new job. He worked at a hospital now. He was a receptionist in the waiting room. He put on his new uniform and looked in the mirror. He felt nervous but also excited. He ate a small breakfast because his stomach was not calm. He left his house and walked to the bus stop. The bus arrived on time. He sat near the window and watched the streets.

He arrived at the hospital fifteen minutes early. He took a deep breath and walked inside. The waiting room was big and bright. There were many chairs in rows. Some people sat and waited to see a doctor. A woman at the front desk smiled at Carlos. Her name was Marta. She said, "Welcome to the team, Carlos." Carlos smiled back and said, "Thank you, I am happy to be here." Marta showed him the computer and the telephone. She explained how to help the patients. Carlos listened carefully and took notes.

He wanted to do a good job. He repeated the instructions in his head to remember them. A man walked up to the desk. He looked worried. He said, "Excuse me, I have an appointment at ten o'clock." Carlos checked the computer. He found the man's name on the list. He said, "Yes, please sit down and the doctor will call you soon." The man said, "Thank you very much." A New Beginning for Carlos

    Name: ______________________   Date: ____________

Carlos had barely slept the night before, his mind racing with thoughts about what lay ahead. It was the morning of his very first day as an administrative assistant at a busy hospital, and although he had prepared thoroughly, he couldn't shake the nervous flutter in his stomach. He had ironed his shirt twice, packed his bag with a notebook and a pen, and rehearsed possible conversations in front of the bathroom mirror. As he walked through the glass entrance of the hospital, the strong smell of disinfectant hit him immediately. The waiting room stretched out before him — rows of plastic chairs, a quietly buzzing television screen on the wall, and a handful of patients already seated with tired expressions. He approached the front desk, where a woman with short hair and kind eyes was sorting through a pile of folders.

"You must be Carlos," she said warmly, extending her hand. "I'm Marta, and I'll be training you this week." Marta wasted no time in walking Carlos through the daily routine, explaining how the scheduling system worked and how to handle patient enquiries with both efficiency and empathy. "The key to this job," she told him, "is making people feel heard, even when you're incredibly busy." Carlos nodded and tried to absorb everything she was saying, though the amount of information was slightly overwhelming. He learned how to register new patients, update medical records on the system, and direct visitors to the correct department. Marta also warned him that the waiting room could become quite tense at times, especially when appointments were running behind schedule.

"Patience is your greatest tool here," she added with a reassuring smile. Carlos appreciated her calm and supportive approach, which helped settle his nerves considerably. By mid-morning, Carlos was handling his first real task on his own — checking in an elderly gentleman who seemed confused about which doctor he was supposed to see. "Don't worry," Carlos said gently, "let me look that up for you." He searched the system, found the correct details, and guided the man to the right waiting area, earning a grateful nod in return. As the hours passed, Carlos grew more comfortable with the rhythm of the waiting room — the constant flow of arrivals, the ringing phones, and the occasional anxious question from a worried relative. By the end of his shift, Marta placed a hand on his shoulder and said, "You've handled today really well, Carlos — I think you're going to be a great fit." Walking home that evening, Carlos felt a quiet sense of accomplishment; the day had been challenging, but it had also confirmed that he had made the right decision.
